My stats for reference: 5' 7" / 180 lbs Suit sizes: Blazer 42R Trousers 34R Waistcoat 40R Key thing with any suit: alterations! For this suit, the blazer and pants definitely needed modifications for my body type. When you see that R for the trousers you need to factor in hemming the pants (unless you are mad tall??). I had the pants tapered since I love a slimmer look and added cuffs because of the thick fabric. I had a massive brain fart and asked for a 1 inch cuff instead of a 2. While it looks ok, I will be going back to change this. Luckily there enough fabric to make it happen. The blazer fits well however the issue for me is the sleeves. R for me means "ready to get this altered." Once again, I had some miscommunications with my tailor because I usually want to show lots of cuff. It's a personal preferences of mine! But as you can see here, only a micro bit of sleeve can be seen. I did position myself in the other image to see the sleeve. The blazer will also be going back to get alterations. The "you can't wear white after Labor Day," rule was created to separate the old money elitists from the new money group. "It [was] insiders trying to keep other people out," according to Valerie Steele, director of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, in an interview with Time, "and outsiders trying to climb in by proving they know the rules."
For those who had money and could leave the city during warmer months, white was considered vacation attire. "If you look at any photograph of any city in America in the 1930s, you'll see people in dark clothes," Charlie Scheips, author of American Fashion, has said. Meanwhile, white linen suits and Panama hats were considered the "look of leisure."
In short, if you lived in the dirty city, you wore dark clothes. If you were wealthy enough to escape to a vacation home for the summer, you wore white āleisureā looks ā until it was time to return to urban life, that is.
