The last time I made a big pantry edit, we didn’t have a small child; our pantry contents and the way we utilize our pantry has shifted dramatically! Here’s the biggest areas we addressed:
1️⃣ We don’t just have bags of chips anymore. We now have individual bags of grab and go kid snacks, fruit snacks, and WAY more bars. Tossing them together in opaque single woven baskets no longer worked for us. We need to separate into smaller clear containers, to identify, access, and sort more easily.
2️⃣ With a child, our pantry contents have grown and it was time to remove all the spare paper and plastic party ware I had stored in the bottom of the pantry. It’s been relocated to a bin and moved to storage.
3️⃣ Reusable bags had taken over! We didn’t need them ALL in there.
4️⃣ Added more labels and more inclusive labels to help “cross contamination” of baskets. While most categories were obvious to me, they may not be to everyone in the house, so labeling more makes the contents more obvious.
The overall setup didn’t have to change — the overall setup has served us well. We just needed some fine tuning and adapt to our current needs. The things we have used for years and loved:
- turntables in the corners
- adjustable can risers for canned goods
- door system on the back of the pantry door for added storage
- decanting only certain items we always keep in stock in clear, airtight, clear canisters.
- grouping, categorizing, and organizing by the items we have (function first, always!)
