Into The Woods by Jenny Holiday ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pub Date: January 7, 2025

What an adorable story! Gretchen Miller has sworn off dating and accepts a summer job of being a dance teacher at a summer camp in Minnesota. Teddy Knight just finished a tour with this rock band and has also gotten roped into working at this summer camp while he figures out what his next steps in his life are going to be. When Gretchen and Teddy get lost in the woods and have to rely on each other for sanity and warmth, they realize each are not who they seem at first glance. I love the camp setting and the morning swims in the lake. The characters were fun, both with flaws and it was refreshing that we were in their late 30’s / early 40’s. The banter between Gretchen and Teddy and the sarcastic humor was spectacular. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the dual narrators. I think it was a smart choice. This was a story about finding yourself again and being inspired.

My daughter received some great gifts for her birthday!

The books are mine but everything else in this picture is hers.

Kendra Scott jewelry is so in right now for the tweens.

OMG the amount of face, body and hair care she received from friends was insane.

We also got her the weighted blanket that looks soooo cozy!

One Night Two Holidays by Ali Brady ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This was such a fun novella. I loved the celebration of both Hanukkah and Christmas. The two neighbors who were alone for the holidays forced together by a storm. They made the most of a difficult situation and not only got to enjoy the holidays but one another too. I really liked the characters, their relationship and the chemistry between them. I enjoyed how their differences complimented one another - and that they embraced and celebrated them. This was a well written, easy to read and fun holiday book. A perfect quick and fun read.

Pictures of You by Emma Grey ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thought this was really well done. It reminded me of being a teenager and waiting for the next episode of my favorite TV shows to come out (Gossip Girl, The OC, Dawson’s Creek... just to name a few!) It had that gossipy, angsty, drama filled can’t look away kind of chaos. I loved the romance, the twists and turns and the constant questions about what was really going on. Told it two different POV and timelines, I thought that was really well done and hard to put down. After an accident, Evie wakes up thinking she is waking up after a party with her best friend. Little does she know, she and Bree are no longer friends, her husband is dead and she can’t remember anything in between. When Drew, an old friend who she can’t remember, comes to help her, Evie starts to piece together her life, and the many secrets she held. Evie gets a second chance at life and love - will she make decisions differently this time around?

The Note by Alafair Burke ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I REALLY wanted to like this one, but it just did not work for me. The characters are toxic, childish and just blah people. The story moves slowly, despite it being a short book. 3 childhood friends meet up in the Hampton’s for a refresh - all 3 having recently been cancelled. When they leave a prank note on a car, they find themselves at the center of a police investigation. Along the way, they start to question if they can really trust each other. I loved the idea of this book, but the 3 women were just so terrible and parts of the book moved so slowly that it just did not work for me. It was a quick read and if terrible characters do not bother you, it may be worth giving it a try. It was just unfortunately not what I expected.

Holiday Hostilities by Katie Bailey ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Olivia and her brother’s best friend Aaron, an NFL star, don’t get along. Olivia is in a crappy living situation and tries to find somewhere to go over the holidays. Aaron offers up his apartment in exchange for Olivia to bid on him during a fundraiser (using his money of course). All of the characters are adorable. Both Olivia and Aaron were lovely and the banter between them was fantastic. I loved the enemies to lovers and brothers’ best friend troupes. I also appreciated that they didn’t jump into the relationship right away, both were questioning what should happen. The holidays were mixed in throughout the story but was not the main focus of it. This was one of my first sports romance reads, and surprising to me, it wasn’t centered on sports. Bailey did a good job weaving in the sports and the holidays in the story.

You’ll Never Believe Me: A Life of Lies, Second Tries, and Things I Should Only Tell My Therapist by Kari Farrell ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pub Day: January 7, 2024

I love reading about other people’s lives, the reasons behind what they do, mistakes they’ve made along the way and how they have overcome different things or events. I had never heard of Kari Farrell before and am glad that the story wasn’t glorifying her time behind bars but was more in her mind and the reasoning behind and what led up to certain events. Farrell is known as the “hipster grifter” is known for swindling people out of their money and for not paying rent and check fraud. Not someone I would want to hang around with. Needless to say, this story was interesting, decently well written and held my attention. I listened to the audiobook and Farrell read her own story. She did a great job, she spoke at my speed and it was the first book in a while that I listened to at 1 speed instead of 1.25.

I Think We’ve Been Here Before by Suzy Krause ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book definitely made me think! I enjoyed the different perspectives and how when faced with the end of life, how different people prioritize different things. A variety of perspectives, ages and life experiences all made for an interesting read - especially since they were all linked together as a family. When the news tells you that a cosmic blast is going to destroy humanity in the next few weeks, we get to follow how an extended family handles the news. Everyone wants to live out their final days enjoying life, despite not all being together physically. A fascinating read that shows how different people handle difficult information. From processing it, to accepting it to moving forward.

Snow Going Back by Emma Tallon ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Kate had an unexpected proposal from her boyfriend Lance in front of her family. He mistakenly took her surprise yes and a yes and she felt she couldn’t get out of it. A quick wedding is being planned by Kate’s mother to be on New Years Eve. Kate was sent to the US to stay there while sorting out a will of a client of theirs and determining who is going to get what assets. While in the US she has to stay in the home of said client and finds out that Sam is already living there. The banter between Kate and Sam was great. I enjoyed where the story went, although I feel like feelings changed at a drop of a hat, or should I say kettle. This was a clean, emotional romance with no spice. I appreciated that there was no physical cheating the occurred. The characters were charming, and I loved the small-town vibes and the enemies to lovers troupe. I listened to the audiobook and loved that narrator.

Nobody’s Perfect by Sally Kilpatrick ⭐⭐⭐💫

Vivian Quackenbush is a stay-at-home mom to her son who is newly in college. While she thinks she is getting ready for a life of being an empty nester, she comes across divorce papers from her husband, Mitch. Her world is turned upside down. She has a YouTube site called Mom Scout where she posts tips for fellow moms. Vivian drunkenly posts a video that goes viral. All of a sudden, she is receiving opportunities to be an influencer for certain products. She is going through all of this alongside her two best friends. I never connected with Vivian’s character and was honestly annoyed with her at times. She seemed much younger than her actual age. I wish the friendship between the three of them was more robust and more connected. Lots of mistakes were made and most of them I felt were avoidable. This was a story about Vivian trying to find herself after divorce. I do love the Mom Scout’s idea; my son is in Cub Scouts and earns badges – why can’t I too? The ending felt lackluster and predictable.

I’ll Come to You by Rebecca Kauffman ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

I am a tough critic of family dramas, so take my review with a grain of salt. I liked the different stories and how they all connected in the end. Although I did not like all the characters, they were all unique and interesting in their own way. I always find family secrets to be entertaining. This book had some difficult topics, secrets and personalities, as all families do. I, however, found that the transition between different stories and POV (which alternated throughout the book) were not smooth. It often made it confusing and I was not always 100% sure what was going on. The author did a great job of showing different emotions and making you feel for whatever the characters were going through, I just wish that it flowed more smoothly. If you are a fan of family dramas, give it a try.

The French Winemaker’s Daughter by Loretta Ellsworth ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a beautiful story to come out of such an ugly time. This story is told in different points of view by two strong women, over two time periods - WWII France and Paris in the 1990’s. Martine’s father had her hide in an armoire with a bottle of wine when the Germans came for them at their vineyard. She manages to survive and run away to her aunt in Paris, only to be found by a nun, who takes her to an Abbey where she rides out the rest of the war. 1990 Charlotte is an airline pilot who spends much of her time in Paris. When she is given a bottle of wine, she discovers a secret, which sends her on a quest to find its owners, who disappeared during WWII. These are two strong women, who live drastically different lives. They have heartache, secrets and determination. This story is one of love and strength, the power of doing what is right and fate. I found myself laughing and crying... and all the emotions in between. My one complaint is that I wish we had a little more history. Overall a beautiful book.

The Memory Library by Kate Storey ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ella receives a call that her mother Sally has had a bad fall. Ella reluctantly drops everything in her life to fly from Australia to England to take care of her mother. While she is there, she notices some memory issues with Sally. As someone who delt with dementia with my grandmother until she passed and now with my father-in-law, a lot of this felt very real. This was a story about second chances between mother and daughter. I loved the references to a lot of classic books. The story is told in a dual timeline (current day and flashbacks) and from two POVs. The writing was done well and the characters, although not all likable at the beginning, do grow on you. I love stories that showcase the complexity of family relationships and dynamics. Even though the overarching feeling was sad, there was still a lot of love and hope that were woven in there. For me, it brought up a lot of memories.

Roland Rogers Isn’t Dead Yet by Samantha Allen ⭐⭐⭐💫

This was nothing like I was expecting. A little odd of a book, but still enjoyable. Adam Gallagher is hired to write down Roland Rogers life story in a book as a ghostwriter. Except, when Adam arrives at Roland's home, he finds that he is dead and communicates with Adam through electronics. Roland is a ghost. There are some very weird things that occur. They are calling this a rom com, but not in my opinion. It felt more like contemporary fiction. There are some laugh out loud moments throughout the story. I didn’t feel the connection between Adam and Roland, there was no chemistry. Some of the pacing felt off but overall, it was an entertaining read.

Pick-Up by Nora Dahlia ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thought that this was so adorable. I could not put it down - I was sucked into the characters' lives. My only complaint, some of it dragged on a little bit and I wish we had a little more background information on all the characters... just a little more depth. All that being said, this was real, this was adorable, the chemistry was there, the drama was there, the mountain to climb was there. Just an overall enjoyable book. A later in life romance - Sasha and Ethan are juggling divorces, children and careers. Yet, when work brings them together on a pretty deserted tropical island, they can't ignore the sparks that are flying. However, when they return to real life, the drama and bumps in the road get in the way. Learning how to let go of the past, prioritize today and take care of yourself as a parent, is not for the faint of heart. Will they be able to make it work? A truly enjoyable and fun read... with some deeper moments and series topics.

What the Wife Knew by Darby Kane ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Struggling to review this one. I really liked the first halfish of the book. The pieces were all there. I enjoyed the POV of the second wife. But the second half was a struggle for me. I did not like the POV of the person killed. I did not like anything about him. I did not like Addison, the second wife's, pov anymore. The pieces were all over the place and the story just felt ridiculous. There were too many twists and turns and it no longer felt realistic and enjoyable. I am tough on thrillers though, so maybe try this for yourself? Dr. Daugherty is a famous surgeon, tragedy survivor and hero. Of course Addison, the new second wife, is the prime suspect when he is found dead. But Addison receives a note of her own - will she be able to walk away as a rich widow?

Trouble Island by Sharon Short ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Although we did not connect with the characters or story, it was an interesting book. A story set on an island where bootleggers and gangsters lived and often stopped.
