The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale ends August 3, and these two in-stock staples are still worth grabbing.

I styled this olive green jacket (a best-seller last year, back in a nearly identical version) and a classic chambray shirt for now and as the weather cools.

FIT NOTES:

This green jacket has drop sleeves and is oversized. I size down to a small.

These Madewell jeans had me excited in the Nordstrom dressing room. They’re fitted in the hips and thighs with the perfect length for flat shoes at 5’6”, and they open into a wide flared leg. The fitted hips and thighs combined with the flared wide leg creates space between my thighs as only a pair of flared jeans can do.

The fit was perfect, but as I kept looking at my dressing room photos, I worried they were too wide at the hem. I’d styled them with a chambray shirt and suede ankle boots and the wide flare with chambray and suede boots felt too Western for my style.

This reminded me of an important styling rule: when you have a piece that you love but are a little scared to wear because it’s out of your comfort zone, style it with classic wardrobe staples so it feels like you. After styling them in new ways, I can say without hesitation that they’re amazing. They’re outfit makers and I love them so much that after some thought, I’m returning the other styles that came home with me. They’re making me realize I only want total wows in my closet.

My takeaway: if you have an item you’re scared to wear but love, try it with classic pieces to make it feel like you.

This cardigan is my top pick for the Anniversary sale. These cloth-covered buttons are a little detail that instantly elevates this sweater. Wear it like a shirt or layered. Madewell jeans don’t usually work for me, but these crop wide leg flare ones might because they're made with stretchy denim. The waist sits at about 11.75 inches high, which is perfect since I have a shorter torso and prefer a medium-high waist. Madewell jeans usually run small on me, so I'm trying both my normal size and one size bigger to see which fits better.
