Family Photos

Family photos can be stressful, but the moments captured are often priceless treasures. A good photographer is patient and has an eye for capturing subjects in their best light. Outfit planning, however, is on you!

The goal is to make sure everyone’s outfit is cohesive and complementary. No one’s clothing should compete with anyone else’s. That can be tricky! So I’m here to help.

In this photo, I’ve focused on the mother and daughter. Oftentimes, I begin planning with women’s/girls’ clothing because it can be tricky to find the right pieces. Once those are chosen, you can find clothing for the men/boys to complete the look.

If you have more than one daughter (or more than one son), resist the urge of having them wear the exact same outfit. Using the photo above, if you needed to dress up a second daughter, choose a similar dress with different sleeves or a different length or choose a dress in the cream family (like mom’s) . I’ll link some examples below. Sons can wear denim pants (to coordinate with the daughter’s dress) and a collared shirt like a polo or linen top. Stay tuned for more examples and suggested outfits.

This is how I give this frumpy, shapeless top a more flattering fit. Sure, you could just tuck it in, but it has so much extra fabric that it would make the skirt look lumpy. Instead, fold the top under at your natural waist and use a hair elastic to “tie” it in place (loosen or tighten it to your liking). Then, flip the tied portion under the front of the blouse to hide it. Now you have a much more flattering fit, no alterations required.

It’s a cool 72° and I am here for it. Time to bring out my new fall “uniform”: comfy joggers and a cute, slouchy sweater.

I like the roominess of joggers and their ease of movement. Plus, they can be styled up or down depending on the top you wear and how you accessorize. These joggers by Zella are lightweight, which is great for late summer/early fall. But if you’d like a heavier pair for the colder months, check out the fleece pair from Old Navy I’ve linked to this post (it’s my all time favorite pair of joggers).

Strappy sandals are fun for warmer days, or throw on a pair of casual sneakers.

I’m getting outfits ready for end of summer family photos. I’m not a big fan of matchy-matchy outfits; instead I like to find pieces that complement each other. These dresses and shoes would be perfect for a mother/daughter duo.

Don’t reach for those sweatpants or worn out jeans. Instead, grab a pair of joggers, a neutral tank, and a denim jacket. Joggers are basically loungewear - so, so comfy. Pairing them with a denim jacket really elevates the look. Small gold earrings, a gold strand necklace, and stretchy bracelets bump it up even further.

When there’s no time for makeup, I reach for my tinted SPF. It really goes a long way in evening out my skin tone while protecting me from the sun. A dab of cream blush and lip gloss finish the casual, comfy look.

A little bit of effort made me feel more energized and motivated to tackle the day. It felt good, and I think I’ll be doing more of that.

My go-to summer outfit for feeling pulled together, yet comfy, is a tank top, maxi skirt, and flat shoes. I use this formula on repeat, switching out tops, skirts, and shoes to suit the day. Add some jewelry to dress it up.

This skirt is one of my favorites by Caslon. I’ve had it for about 5 years and it’s still active in my wardrobe rotation. Sadly, I don’t think it’s currently for sale, but I’ll link similar options.

I took a gamble on these Old Navy wide leg pants, but I’m definitely in love! They’re super comfy and have a drawstring waist for the perfect fit. I’m 5’4” and am wearing size S. If you’re my height, go for petite length if you want to pair it with flats or sneakers.

Date night with the hubby deserves a fresh look. I love a feminine, flowy skirt, and this one from Nordstrom Rack is “chef’s kiss”. It’s lightweight, drapes beautifully, and has pockets! The neutral colors will take you from summer to fall, making this piece wearable across multiple seasons (a bonus, in my book).

I’ve paired the skirt with an open stitch sweater, which is very on trend, but not so wild that it will go out of style too quickly.

Add some gold or pearl jewelry and a neutral wedge to complete the look. So comfy, so beautiful.
