Are you backpacking the Enchantments soon, or dream to do so? Here’s a recap of my experience! We applied for the backpacking lottery on recreation.gov and scored permits to camp in snow zone! While the most popular zone is core enchantment zone, I think that camping in snow zone was the best bet. We chose the last camp site, furthest into snow zone at upper snow lakes, getting as close as we could to core zone. We set up camp after hiking 9 miles with 4600ft of gain in 8 hours on our first day! That included a nice lunch break and swim at Nada lake. Our second day we day hiked into core zone leaving majority of our gear at our campsite. We hiked to Asgard’s Pass and back which was a round trip of 11.5 miles with 3800ft of gain. The first 3 miles between snow and core zones were the toughest with the most incline, but still better than climbing up Asgard with a full pack on! Core zone is undeniably enchanting, and something I wish everyone could experience! After our day hike we relaxed back at camp and on the final day we packed up and made the 9 mile descent back out to snow zone trailhead. 30 miles in 3 days with 8400ft of gain and descent was tough to say the least but totally worth it ! Part 6 - Gear I brought to backpack the Enchantments! Here’s the basic gear that I bring with me when backpacking. I love and recommend everything that I use, but if you think there’s a key item I’m missing out on, please let me know what it is! My first ever backpacking trip was about 5 years ago, and I learn something new on every trip. I usually only do 1-3 night trips, and honestly that’s more than enough for me. As much as I love sleeping in the middle of the wilderness with no phone service, eating dehydrated meals, I do also love sleeping in comfortable beds, with freshly cooked meals and taking a shower each night. I have a tendency to overpack, but I’d rather be over prepared than underprepared. I’ve accepted my fate that I will always be a 35-45lb pack girlie, but I envy the people who minimize their bags to 20-25lbs. I almost ALWAYS shop discounted items/sales/use coupons from REI or buy second hand from Facebook marketplace or other websites. You don’t need the newest, best, most expensive gear. Certain things like a sleeping bag and pad are worth the initial high cost, but for other things you can get away with cheaper items. Backpacking, hiking and camping are all a learning process. To be prepared, it’s important to do research, but if you’re like me - the best way to learn is from your mistakes!
