BOOK REVIEW

Redeeming Justice by Jarrett Adams

(@prhaudio #gifted)

This was yet another incredible read about the criminal justice system and the devastating consequences of wrongful conviction. In his memoir, Adams details his wrongful conviction as a teenager, the 10 years he spent in prison before exoneration, and his journey to becoming a defense attorney.

Adams’ story was heartbreaking, but I very much appreciate his willingness to share his story with readers. I cannot fathom what he went through, but for him to spend a decade in prison for a crime he didn’t commit, and then to be back in the courtroom as the defense attorney?! It’s very inspiring.

If victims of wrongful convictions had an attorney who cares as much as Adams, they likely wouldn’t have been wrongfully convicted.

A powerful memoir, and I enjoyed the audiobook, which is narrated by Adams. Highly recommend!

📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖

Framed by John Grisham and Jim McCloskey is definitely one of my top reads of 2024. It covers 10 stories of wrongful conviction and is, as expected, infuriating and heart breaking.

I’ve heard of some cases covered in the book, but others were new to me. But I learned something from each story. I cried multiple times throughout the book - especially learning some of the men wrongfully convicted are still in prison and one was executed.

My main takeaways:
1. Wrongful conviction happens more often than we’d like to admit. Which I say all the time, but the point still stands.
2. The criminal justice system is not just (I used to say it’s broken, but now I agree with @book.ish.bitch - it’s not; it’s working exactly as it’s intended. 😢 a hard hitting epiphany).
3. Never, ever, ever waive your Miranda rights and speak without a lawyer present. Never. I think every single person in this book did, because they wanted to be helpful to police or didn’t want to look guilty (they weren’t).And look what happened…

🎧 AUDIOBOOK REVIEWS 🎧

A Well-Trained Wife by Tia Levings

This was a powerful and heart-breaking memoir about Christian fundamentalism (think - Duggar family). I cannot believe the abuse the author endured from her husband. Highly recommend the audiobook version.

A Little Less Broken by Marian Schembari

Another powerful audiobook about the author’s journey to an autism diagnosis. I learned a lot and really resonated with her chapters on parenting struggles.

Thank you @macmillan.audio for the #gifted audiobooks!

INTERNATIONAL WRONGFUL CONVICTION DAY

Today is the 11th annual Wrongful Conviction Day - a day to raise awareness of the causes and remedies of wrongful conviction and recognize the toll wrongful conviction takes on innocent people and their families.

I really felt the need to acknowledge Wrongful Conviction Day this year. Last week, Missouri executed an innocent man - Marcellus Williams. I’m still so mad and heart broken. There’s a man in Texas who is scheduled to be executed this month - evidence also points to his innocence.

Wrongful conviction happens SO much more than people realize. And once someone is put in prison, it’s nearly impossible for them to regain their freedom. This is the reality of the U.S. criminal justice system.

One of the best ways to help is supporting organizations that work to free the innocent - the Equal Justice Initiative and the Innocence Project are my favorites.

I also think we need to make sure we’re aware of the problem and strive to learn more. To help, I put together a stack of books that talk about wrongful conviction. I’ve read almost all of these (and have seen the ones I haven’t yet read highly recommended).

Check out my stories for more info on these organizations!

BOOK REVIEW

(#gifted @prhaudio @riverheadbooks)

Bringing Ben Home by Barbara Bradley Hagerty (out now!)

Another day, yet another book about wrongful conviction. It really says something about our criminal justice system with the number of books and articles and podcasts about wrongful convictions 🫠

This was another eye-opening account of wrongful conviction - this time the case of Ben Spencer in Dallas, TX.

I had all the usual reactions when I read this type of book - anger, disbelief, rage, frustration, and sadness.

I found this book very interesting because the author provided great descriptions of many factors that lead to wrongful conviction - eyewitness testimony, “testilying”, confirmation bias, etc. I learned some new things! I was also interested in hearing about this case - it’s the first one I’ve learned about where there was not any DNA evidence available. So I’m amazed by the work of Ben Spencer’s team and how they got him out of prison without conclusive DNA evidence. But it’s also disheartening because there are so many people in the same situation as Ben Spencer - but without DNA evidence proving their innocence, they’ll likely never leave prison. (Cue the rage and frustration)

One bright spot was the author’s description of some criminal justice reforms - conviction integrity units (when they have proper autonomy) and disproving some of the fake science commonly used in convictions (e.g., hair analysis).

In short - please read this one. Wrongful conviction happens so much more often than people realize. And I’m always shocked by how little people know about the topic.

What are you reading this week?

📚 BOOK REVIEW 📚

The Sing Sing Files by Dan Slepian

If you know me at all, you know I’ll never turn down the chance to read a book about the criminal justice system - especially related to wrongful incarceration. So huge thank you to @celadonbooks for the #gifted copy!

It feels weird to say this was a “good” book or I “enjoyed” it, because this part-memoir, part-investigative journalism book revolves around one man’s journey in helping SIX wrongfully imprisoned men get released from Sing Sing Prison in New York.

I don’t really know what to say. It’s infuriating to me that this country is okay with people who are obviously innocent being imprisoned. And making it nearly impossible to gain their freedom because police departments, prosecutors, and judges don’t want to admit they’re wrong?!?!? Make it make sense. I don’t understand how these people are okay with that and think they’re doing their jobs.

Did you know that experts estimate between 1-5% of people in U.S. prisons are innocent? That’s between 20,000 and over 100,000 people.

I appreciate the author writing this book and shedding even more light on the topic. I’m still in awe that he was able to help SIX men in a single prison get their freedom back. I’ll definitely be checking out those Dateline episode and podcasts mentioned in the book.

This one comes out on September 10th. PLEASE grab a copy!
