Sneak peek of our 13 day trip to Europe as empty nesters! We picked up our kids for 8 days & did France, Spain & Portugal with them. Then we stayed on for 4 extra days just the two of us! Bench building: putting in those 100’s of pegs was so satisfying! When redoing our mudroom we decided we needed a bench that did triple duty- a place to put down our coffee on the way out the door, take a seat while putting on our boots and a place to store our slippers for when we arrive at the cottage. This one fit the bill! Love the open shelf underneath to store our mostly clean shoes. Have a shoe tray next to it for mud season & the inevitable mess of living at the end of a long dirt road.

Yep, one backpack! Capsule wardrobe: 4 pants, 10 shirts, 1 skirt, 2 dresses, 1 pair of shorts (never wore), 2 lightweight jackets, 1 crossbody purse, 1 pair of sneakers, 2 pairs of flats (cobblestones!) I’m not the most creative dresser- but yes 12 days, one back pack, stayed in airbnbs so could do laundry but only if we stayed two nights bc Europe = no dryers! Some airbnbs have no elevators plus we stayed in the Old Towns of each city so ubers or bolts as they are also called couldn’t always pull up right in front of our place. Used Nanny Bag app to store bags while exploring cities if we were leaving that day.

Empty nester advice: We highly recommend tagging on a few days to a family vacation for just the two of you! We booked this stay as soon as @addisonswonderland mentioned that she would be renting out her gorgeous apartment in Antibes, France. We knew we wanted to visit this sweet little town & it was a dream come true to also stay in her airbnb! This town in the south of France has our hearts! We love absolutely everything about it & spent our entire 3 days there planning a return visit & a longer stay! Maybe next year for our 30th Anniversary?! The streets, the views, the quaint squares, the shops, the restaurants, long walks along the ocean, views of snow capped mountains, absolutely everything! I was born in Germany 55 years ago today. I moved to the US when I was 1. When I went on a trip to Germany with my dad in my mid 20’s my mom sent me along with some money to buy something special from the place I was born. I chose this beautiful embroidered tablecloth. I grew up with my mom adorning our table with a very similar one & could think of nothing more I could want for my own. As an empty nester myself now I see that there is nothing more beautiful than watching your children grow up in the cozy cocoon you created & then watching them take flight! Love seeing all the amazing places my children have gone! (And sometimes tagging along with them!)

Explore Lisbon, Portugal with us! From the beautiful tiled buildings to the hilly cobblestone streets made from mosaic patterns of handcut white limestone and black basalt. We stayed in the Alfama district with lots of restaurants nearby, walked the waterfront, saw Praca do Comercio, Shopped Avenida da Liberdade, visited St. George’s Castle. The view from the castle is amazing + lots of peacocks roaming the grounds! Loved Dear Breakfast. Explored Parque Eduardo VII. If we had more time friends recommended day trips to Sintra & Porto.
