Hair Tips

By Locks.By.LibbyBrenner

Trying to care for colored curly hair isn’t NEARLY as difficult as it’s made out to be.

You deserve to have your hair the color you want without fading the gorgeous shade you colored it, sacrificing the health of your hair, or the definition of your curls!

Yes, you CAN have it all!

Dyeing curly hair simply means taking a few extra steps to ensure your color and your curls are both getting the care and attention they need to last as long as possible (whether you need your curls to last a whole week or a color to last months!)

Here is how I’d advise a client post-coloring to care for dyed curly hair…

🫧Wash less frequently and use luke-warm water. Hot water will fade and dry your hair out.

🧴Find color-safe products that don’t strip your hair, and actually protects your hair color.

🚿Moisturize your hair on wash days. Use a hydrating conditioner, then follow up with a leave-in.

💤Protect your curls overnight by sleeping with a silk scrunchie, pillowcase, or bonnet.

TLDR: keep your hair moisturized, don’t overheat it, and handle it with care.

If you have curly hair DON’T do this:

🪮Don’t rip through your hair when brushing it. Make sure the tool you are using is flexible and can work through the tangles easily.

🚿Don’t go to bed with your hair wet. I know it’s hard, but try to make sure your curls are completely dry before bed time. Mold, breakage and frizz can happen and we definitely don’t need that.

🧖‍♀️Don’t use a regular bath towel. Microfiber or 100% cotton are your hair’s best friends. If all you have is a cotton t-shirt, that is totally fine to use!

🧴Don’t use products that aren’t water soluble. This is a super awesome way to weigh your hair down and leave product on your hair for wayyyy longer than you think. (No, double washing probably won’t do the trick)

💧Don’t squeeze all the water out of your hair before styling. You need the water to evenly distribute the product and squelch it in! Your hair is still absorbing the water on its surface, so soaking that product up will help shape it! Squeeze water out on the LAST step of your hair products as you form the curls.

There are some things while styling textured hair that are non-negotiables and other things that can not only sabotage the entire process, but also damage your hair…

As a curly hair stylist, this is what you SHOULD and SHOULD NOT do:

Do…
✅ Flip your hair over
✅ Use a high speed & low heat setting
✅ Scrunch diffuse to create more volume

Don’t…
❌ Keep your head upright the entire time
❌ Use high heat just to dry faster
❌ Move the diffuser around once it’s in your hair

The recipe for great curls is volume and definition while minimizing the amount of frizz created as much as possible! And by doing these three things when styling, I’ve found a ton of success! (which makes for amazing curls if I do say so myself 😏)

Using gravity to your advantage really helps to create and hold volume curly hair needs so it isn’t flat on top. By not burning your curls into place with a high heat setting, you’re allowing your curls to dry in a form that naturally happens with your unique curl pattern. And by starting with drying the roots first, your hair will have MUCH less frizz and be able to hold the shape the mids and ends create better!

If you need a solid dryer or diffuser, I definitely have a few favorites (it feels like I tried them all!).

You asked for my top 10 curly hair tips and tricks from a curly stylist, so here they are!

1) Double cleanse your scalp. The first wash isn’t actually washing anything–the second one is!

2) Get yourself a Bounce Curl Brush. See my last post if you need more info 😉

3) Ditch products that leave buildup and weigh down your curls. *LOOK FOR WATER-SOLUABLE PRODUCTS! (I have a ton listed in my links if you need ideas)

4) Don’t overcomplicate hydrating your hair. Use water and lock it in.

5) Skip washing post-workout and pull out your diffuser to refresh instead. Curly-haired people hardly have time for all of that.

6) Find a curl-specialist that knows how to actually cut and style curls. The process IS different and makes a difference. I promise.

7) Choose products that will actually fight frizz, not add to it. ! (Again, I have a ton listed in my links if you need help with this)

8) Diffuse your hair on high speed, low heat.

9) Keep your product routine simple and consistent for optimal results every time.

10) Sleep on a silk pillowcase to avoid hair breakage.

SO, what other questions do you have for me as a curly hair stylist?!

No, this isn’t just brushing your hair.

This is clumping your curls.

Ensuring every clump is a uniform size.

AND brushing out any knots.

All in the same swipe.

When styling curls, time is of the essence. You need to get your hair prepped, products in, and scrunched while it’s still soaking wet (cue the wet scrunch sound).

This tool will help to define each individual curl without needing to finger curl each individual strand. Which not only saves time, but also means…

LESS FRIZZ.

I have never seen more defined curly hair as when I use this brush. I don’t think I could go a day without it and as a curly stylist, I will recommend it to every single one of my clients every chance I get!

If you want the link to this brush, comment BOUNCE CURL and I’ll send it your way!

Would you believe me if I told you CLIPS are the secret to more voluminous hair?

No, I’m not joking and yes, it really is that simple.

These clips are specifically designed to help hair to remember to stand in a specific way as it dries so you get the volume you want from your roots without any additional products.

That’s it. ♥️

Comment ROOT CLIPS to check them out and please, please, please let me know if they work as many wonders for you at home as they do here in my studio!

How to dry brush your curls. Take it nice and slow and don’t rip through your hair! #drybrushing #hairstylistsoftiktok #curlyhairtutorial #curlyhead
Is the top layer of your hair constantly looking like its *not quite* straight, but also not really curly but also mayybe wavy??

I promise, you are not alone and I know how to fix it!

Adding layers will help the natural patterns of that top layer to be less weighed down so it can learn to fully curl when you treat it like the curly hair it is!

Sometimes the weight up top is due to buildup! Make sure you clarify your hair on a regular basis to ensure the product there isn’t stopping the hair from taking shape.

Don’t wait until it’s dry to style–curls LOVE being styles soaking wet. Ideally straight out of the shower.

Section those curls out! I have a brush with ridges on the side to create clumps of hair that can form into a singular curl so strands aren’t going wherever they want and create a frizzy mess!

You want to avoid heat so the curls aren’t forced into an unnatural pattern. The very best way to do this is to use a diffuser on the lowest heat setting and highest air setting possible so you can get all the dry and way less damage.

Say ONTOP for the products mentioned in this video!

Comment LOW DENSITY for a 🔗link to my favorite fine curly hair products!

The cut ✂️
Keep a lot of weight at the bottom then add some light layers after getting that base situated to prevent anything from looking sparse or stringy. Then finish off the style by cutting dry after everything and following curl pattern after washing and adding product to ensure the curls lay and end where they should.

Products 🧴
You want lightweight products that hold well to ensure fine hair isn’t weighed down. Let me know if you want me to send those your way!

Styling 🪮
Use a flat hand if curls seem to be disrupted by scrunching product in and root clip! When diffusing you can hover diffuse for elongation and to create less frizz or scrunch diffuse to coax more volume out of the curls.

What questions do you have on your low density, fine curly hair?

Caring for colored curly hair shouldn’t feel impossible… because it isn’t!

You can absolutely still have beautiful, coiled, juicy curls after coloring your hair if you care for it properly!

Making sure your curls aren’t dried out plays a huge factor in your hair health. Not scalding the color on your hair and using the right conditioner and/or conditioning treatments to lock in that moisture will help to color stay and your hair remain healthy ♥️

I will always recommend using products that will protect the color while still cleansing and creating a fantastic curl pattern your texture is familiar with. Finding effective, color-safe products will be the key to extending the life of that color without fading or shifting.

I have some really awesome products I recommend to my clients who’ve dyed their hair, so comment COLOR-SAFE and I’ll send them your way!
