If you use more than 3 products on your curly hair, you’re doing your hair a disservice.

Do you need product to help define and hold your curls? Yes.

Do you need 5-6 products caked into your hair to make that a reality? NO.

You don’t have to drop hundreds of dollars to have beautiful curls when, in fact, keeping your routine simple is BETTER for your hair too.

To avoid creating excess buildup and weighing down your hair, try using just these 3 products on freshly washed hair…

Gel. Foam. Hairspray.

Boom. That’s it.

I’ll share all the curly hair tips I’ve got! So if you have any questions, let me know!

And tell me if you try using less products and how it’s improved your curly hair 👇

Maintaining low porosity hair should not feel like an uphill battle all the time. All curly hair is so beautiful and can be maintained!

So without further ado, here are some of my favorite low porosity hair maintenance tips so you can love that hair you have:

Clarify regularly. I’m talking every 2-4 weeks here (If you have hard water, DEFINITELY every two weeks!). The goal is NOT stripping the moisture while removing any built up product.

Deep treatments regularly. Replenishing the moisture in your hair is so necessary for this hair type, so utilizing a deep treatment can help your hair remain smoother and softer.

Use water soluble products to prevent buildup. If water can’t penetrate the product already on your strand or the strand itself, your hair won’t get any of the amazing benefits from any products you use when you wash it! Make sure you use products that allow water to get through it for when you wash!

Let the water soak into your hair for 3-5 minutes before cleansing. Your hair NEEDS water. Let it soak up as much as possible before taking it away!

Let me know if any of these tips help you with your hair journey as someone with low porosity hair and if you need some water soluble hair products…

As a curly hair stylist, if I could give you one simple piece of advice, it would be this:

Before drying your hair, make sure your curls aren’t frizzy BEFORE drying. Because if there is any sort of frizz prior to drying, when it does finally dry it’ll amplify that frizz three-fold.

Okay, that’s my curly hair tip of the day. Have a great one!

Yes, there’s a special way to wash curly hair! So without further ado, here is how you wash curly hair:

Step 1: Wet hair down.

Step 2: Clarifying shampoo (~1x/month). Note that well water builds up on the hair more than city water, so you may need to consider doing this more if this applies to you!

Step 3: Rinse and repeat until it lathers. This may take 3-4 rounds of washing and that’s normal!

Step 4: Cleansing shampoo to lower the scalp’s ph and close the cuticle. (This will be Step 2 on wash days you are not clarifying!)

Step 5: Conditioner. A half-dollar-sized amount used on mids and ends and sitting for ~5-10 minutes before rinsing is ideal.

I have all of my innersense favorites from this video (Plus my other favorite products) on my storefront!

You don’t have to deal with static !!

Winter curly hair tip:

Innersense has some of the most helpful products I’ve seen as a curl stylist for taming your hair without drying it out or affecting the curl pattern.

Get rid of the dry scalp and forget that static was ever a thing.

I can send you a link to these products if you’re interested! Just type SCALP SCRUB in the comments and I’ll get it over to you ASAP!

Your welcome 🤎

If this is you, yes I’m scared. But I’m also here to help you learn how to style your natural curls so they actually STAY!

Cream is meant to define your curls, but trying to get curls to stay in place without help from other products (that I can send you a link for) is like asking yourself why your finger can’t write on a piece of paper. You need a tool to write something down–even if the paper is in place.

Who knew water is the MOST important step when it comes to styling??

Well, surprise! It is.

DRENCH that hair until it feels like seaweed.

Follow up with gel and rake it from roots to ends.

Then take my favorite brush in the entire world under to smooth and section out the hair.

Babe, you did it.

Comment “BOUNCE CURL” below and I’ll send you the exact products I used in this video so you can do it too!

Having curly hair is HARD.

I wish there were a better way to convey this, but I think the easiest phrase to remember here is “beauty is pain”.

It takes a long time to figure out how to style your hair in a way that compliments your natural curls best and that method often takes more time than a typical styling technique.

But with all of that said (and felt), it’s worth it.

There’s a reason you feel more confident wearing your hair the way it naturally grows. There’s a reason you get so many compliments when you wear it that way. There’s a reason it holds its shape longer in this state.

It’s because you’re meant to embrace your uniqueness and your body feels it when you do.

So yeah, it sucks that product made you want to rip all of that gorgeous hair out. But one bad hair day means you’re closer to finding the products that DO work for you. 🩷

Some stylists want you to rely on them for great hair, but some want you to feel incredible in the hair you have at home too!

It’s so important with curly hair that you can replicate the hair you get sitting in my chair yourself. I want you to see the look in your eyes when you see the final product in my studio every single morning. I want you walking into work feeling like you just left the salon every single day.

And if you have a stylist that doesn’t want that for you… it’s time to find one who does.
