Innersense is one of my favorite haircare brands of ALL TIME.

Why? Oh, I don’t know.

Maybe because they’re water soluble and you don’t need to apply more for touch-ups between wash days… just add more water?

Maybe because their products have insanely clean organic ingredients?

Because they have products that actually DO WHAT THEY SAY THEY WILL like “removing product buildup”?

Or maybe because even if all of these other reasons weren’t applicable, they flat out just work well?

STOP just clamping root clips into your curly hair–do this instead.

*Note that smaller root clips are preferred! (I can send you my faves if you comment ROOT CLIPS)

First, open the clip slightly, but not all the way, to avoid “chomping” the curl while pinching a small section of hair with your fingers.

Place the clip against your forehead and slide it upward into the hair, using the forehead as a guide and gently close (Using the forehead as a guide prevents creasing the hair at the root while still providing the volume!)

Placement and Tips:
• Beginners should start by practicing in the front.
• For the back of the head, use larger clips.
• Avoid using tiny clips in the back, as they can become buried in the hair and cause frizz when removed.
• Allow the clip to slide in and grab the hair naturally.

Let me know if you try this method and how it works!

If you need the perfect root clip recommendation, comment ROOT CLIPS and I’ll DM you my favorites!

I spent too many years of my life ironing away something that made me ME. I want you to have a different experience without the years and years of troubleshooting I endured.

I used to spend excruciatingly long hours in my bathroom with a flat iron after wrestling with a frizzy mess wanting to scream.

Yeah… it’s a universal experience when you have curly hair.

The tears when it just never feels like it looks right is normal.

The sinking feeling when you catch yourself in a reflection mid-day and realize it’s not exactly straight anymore and has taken on a weird shape is normal.

Looking at someone else’s hair filled with envy because you’ll NEVER be able to get your hair to look like that for more than an hour.

It’s torture. It really is.

It wasn’t until I realized I was actually the one torturing myself that it sunk in… my natural hair needs to be treated differently to look good.

When I finally found a routine that highlighted my curls instead of hiding them, my entire world opened up (literally, because my every thought stopped being about my hair).

There were no more tears because having a “bad hair day” only happened once in a while (and weren’t NEARLY as bad)

When I caught myself in a reflection, I’d actually be shocked at how well the shape and volume held and suits my face naturally.

Believe it or not, I was the one who was receiving compliments from others because “their hair could never look like that”.

All I wanted was to be someone else. Someone who had straight, boring hair and fit in with what was “in”.

I wish I could go back and tell her that her curly hair was beautiful…

That when you embrace your natural beauty, you may not look trendy, but you take on a timeless beauty others can only dream of.

Your step-by-step breakdown for styling what some may call wavy hair, but I will always call CURLY hair:

1) Double Cleansing: Always wash the hair twice–this is a key step in the process.

2) Conditioning: Apply a lightweight conditioner. Yes, we want it to hydrate, but we DON’T want it weighing the hair down.

3) Sectioning: Style hair in sections to maintain better control over waves and curls so it doesn’t feel like so much to do. It would feel super daunting without this step 😅

4) Hydration and Sealing: Ensure every section of hair is saturated with water (you can respray if needed!). Then, seal that moisture in using a gel or foam. You can comment LOCKS on this post if you want links to some of my favorites!

5) Removing Excess Moisture: Use a microfiber towel or a 100% cotton t-shirt to remove moisture. DO NOT use regular towels… unless you want frizzy hair.

6) Diffusing: Make sure diffuser settings are high-speed, low-heat.

7) Final Hold: Apply a little bit of hairspray to help the style last longer.

And that’s it! See how long this style can go for as so many of my clients can get 7-10 days of wear from one full style day (getting to 7-10 days does require at least one “refresh day” if not more!)

Getting curly hair to look good every time isn’t some magic recipe.

It’s repetition of habits that nurture your hair and help it into its natural coil!

HERE’S THE SECRET ⬇️

Coloring curly hair should be done in a curl-by-curl approach.

Curly hair naturally sections itself into individual curls. USE THEM to your advantage by treating them as pre-sorted coloring sections!

Hair has memory and will likely replicate the curl patterns they create by forming those ringlets again and again with the strands around it. So doesn’t it make the most sense to use those as a guide to coloring rather than trying to section off hair traditionally and force curls into an unnatural state that could potentially cause gaps or uneven tone when the courts reform later on.

It also helps to use a lower volume developer (10-20 vol max) to avoid damaging the curl pattern. Low and slow is the name of the game here.

Let me know what questions you have about coloring curly hair!

If you use more than 3 products on your curly hair, you’re doing your hair a disservice.

Do you need product to help define and hold your curls? Yes.

Do you need 5-6 products caked into your hair to make that a reality? NO.

You don’t have to drop hundreds of dollars to have beautiful curls when, in fact, keeping your routine simple is BETTER for your hair too.

To avoid creating excess buildup and weighing down your hair, try using just these 3 products on freshly washed hair…

Gel. Foam. Hairspray.

Boom. That’s it.

I’ll share all the curly hair tips I’ve got! So if you have any questions, let me know!

And tell me if you try using less products and how it’s improved your curly hair 👇
