SNAKE LIGHTS - My snake lights are longer than my cluster lights. The snake lights I use are on a strand that is 73.8 feet long. This means they are long enough to go from the top of a tree to the bottom of a tree or all the way around my windmill. I also use them in long garlands. They have 1,000 LED lights per strand.

CLUSTER LIGHTS - These lights are more compact. They are shorter and have more lights per strand. These strands of lights are 49.5 feet long and have 1,500 lights. They are great for using down the trunk of tall trees or they can be used by themselves to drench a tree in light! They can also be great in garlands because they are connectable.

You can combine the two types of lights to light up a whole room. You could even put a cluster light in the middle of your tree and add snake lights all around it. Get creative!

If you want your tree it to shine through your decorations, you should add lights to your tree even if it is a pre-lit tree. I never decorate a tree without adding lights, even pre-lit trees. It makes a huge difference!

The most controversial thing I’ve ever said!

Don’t go around and around your tree putting your lights on. Put them on top to bottom in a zig zag pattern.

When I posted this tip a few years ago, I quickly realized people have some strong feelings about their Christmas lights and how they put them on their trees.

Well, I said what I said. You should put your lights on your tree from top to bottom, not around and around your tree. It’s just that much easier!

If you put your lights on any other way, I encourage you to give this a try!

This simple wire trick keeps everything at the top of the tree in place including the cascading lights. Here’s a simple trick that makes a huge difference when decorating your tree topper!
I always keep a ring of wire loosely around the top of my tree — it helps hold my topper picks securely in place. Now, I’m also using it to hold my cascading lights! 💫

Just drop your picks (or cascading lights) down through the ring, and the tension tightens around them to keep everything steady and beautiful. 🙌

The pre-lit lights may have quit… but this tree wasn’t done shining. 🌲✨

When only part of my pre-lit tree lit, I couldn’t bring myself to throw it out. It’s the perfect size, perfect shape — and honestly, too beautiful to end up in a landfill.

🎄✨ **How many cluster lights do you need to light a 6.5-foot Christmas tree?**
Spoiler: it’s _three_ — and here’s exactly how you do it! 💡

Start **at the top** of the tree with the connector end of the first 49.5 ft strand and work my way **down using my zig-zag lighting technique**. When that strand runs out, connect the **second strand** and keep going down the tree.

At the bottom, use the **extra length** to wrap around the back for full coverage — that’s the strand that plugs into the outlet. Then connect the **third strand back to the top** and fill in any spots that need a little extra sparkle.

✨ You can connect up to three cluster lights together — perfect for a full, evenly lit 6.5-foot tree that _glows from every angle._

When you don’t like multi-color lights, but your kids do.

If you are like me, you think mult-color lights are okay for your kid’s room, but not for the living room. I definitley prefer the warm white glow of my cluster lights and I’ve only ever used multi-color lights in my son’s room. However, I decided to break the rules this year and experiment with mult-color lights.

I like the color of the lights, but I’ve never thought they were really bright enough to really light up a room and if you know me, you know I love to light up a room with my Christmas lights! So, I decided to combine the multi-color lights with the cluster lights to see if I could still light up the room.

The result was a tree with over 10,000 lights! This is the most lights I have ever put on a tree and I do love it! I can’t wait to decorate it!

The cluster lights are bright enough to light up the room and the multi-color lights add a bit of fun Christmas magic and a feeling of nostalgia. I still remember my grandad putting up those old fashioned multi-color lights on the outside of their house.

So far I’ve left both the cluster and mult-color lights on, but if I wanted to turn off the multi-color lights and only have the cluster lights on, I could.

Comment “Lights” if you are getting dizzy becasuse you are still putting your lights on your tree by going around and around your tree. Try mastering this zig zag and a loop technique. It’s so much easier and you won’t be dizzy when you are done.

Start at the top of your tree and bring your lights down the tree to the bottom in a zig zag pattern. If you have lights that are not connectable, you can plug them in to a power strip on the floor.

Now, you also want to be making loops on your branches with your lights as you are going from the top to the bottom of the tree. You are essentially placing the lights on each branch from the back of the branch to the front of the branch and then to the back of the branch. Next, move over or down a branch. You can see the loop in this video.

Have you ever lit your mantel and covered up all your lights with decor? Well, when you are adding lights to your mantel garland, here’s an easy hack to make sure your decor is well lit.

1. First, light your garland.
2. Then, keep extra lights in reserve on either end of the mantel.
3. Decorate your garland.
4. Finally, take the extra lights that you saved and run them back over the top of your decor.
