What I’d wear…

What I'd wear to the office. Chocolate wide-leg trouser, asymmetric black top, woven flats. Black and brown together — the pairing everyone was told to avoid, and the one that always looks the most expensive.

Here's why it works: brown warms black up. All-black at a desk reads severe, and all-neutral reads like you're trying not to be noticed. Put a chocolate trouser under a black top and you get depth without a single pattern or color in the outfit.

The top is doing the real work. An asymmetric hem gives a plain black tee a waist and a line, which is the difference between a top you wear to work and a top you wear to the gym. It's one small structural detail and it's worth paying attention to when you shop.

The flats are the part I'd argue for hardest. A woven Mary Jane keeps this from turning into a meeting — a pointed pump would make the same outfit stiff, and a sneaker would undo the trouser. The shoe is where an office outfit is won or lost.

What I'd wear to school pick up. Black wide-leg knit pant, oversized white tee, sneakers — and a leather jacket thrown over the top so it counts as an outfit.

This is the one I actually reach for. The whole thing takes four seconds and none of it requires a decision at 7:40am, which is the only real test a school-run outfit has to pass.

The pant is the piece worth buying properly. A wide-leg knit sits like a legging and reads like a trouser — that's the entire difference between "I got dressed" and "I didn't." Then the tee goes oversized and slightly tucked at the front, the jacket goes over unzipped, and you're done.

Everything else here is doing one job: the cap for the morning you didn't wash your hair, sunglasses for east-facing carpool line, a woven bag big enough for a water bottle and someone's forgotten lunch.

Wear it to pick up, drop off, the grocery run after, and the coffee you're getting on the way.

What I'd wear to brunch. Chambray shirt, cream satin mini, raffia kitten-heel sandals. The whole thing rests on one idea: pair the dressiest piece you own with the most casual one.

A satin mini on its own is a going-out skirt. Put a soft chambray shirt over it and it becomes daytime — the denim takes the shine down and makes the skirt wearable at 11am. That's the trick, and it works with any slip skirt you already own.

Two things I'd insist on. Roll the sleeves — a chambray shirt worn buttoned to the wrist looks like a uniform, and rolled it looks like you dressed for the weather. And keep the shoe low; a kitten heel walks on a patio, a stiletto doesn't, and this outfit lives outside.

The gold is the last 10%. Stacked bracelets, a layered chain, a two-tone watch — that's what makes a $30 skirt read like you meant it.

Wear it to brunch, a bridal shower, a birthday lunch, a long weekend somewhere warm.

Date night outfit, head to toe. Black lace-trim top, leather funnel-neck jacket, dark wide-leg denim, pointed boots — plus the gold that makes it look like you tried.

The lace hem is the whole outfit. It's the one detail doing the "this is a date, not a Tuesday" work, and it's why the rest can stay plain — denim, black boots, nothing competing. Take the lace out and you've got a nice going-out look. Leave it in and it reads intentional.

Two things I'd tell you before you buy: the jean needs to be long enough to nearly cover the boot, or the wide leg loses its line. And the gold is not optional — the earrings and the watch are what separate this from all-black-because-it's-easy. Skip them and the outfit goes flat.

Wear it to dinner, drinks, a birthday, an anniversary, a first date you want to feel good at.
