Gross motor

By Playful.Movements

February movement looks different over here 💘

Bounce houses aren’t just fun—they’re packed with:
• sensory input
• balance challenges
• core work
• and a lot of regulation through play

Just kids moving their bodies and having fun 💕

Stuck inside because it’s way too cold to play outside?
These are some of my go-to indoor toddler activities as a pediatric physical therapist and toddler mom 🤍

I love choosing indoor play ideas that support:
• Gross motor skills
• Fine motor skills
• Sensory input
• Visual tracking
• Coordination & motor planning

The best part? These are simple developmentally appropriate activities you can do right at home.

You likely have supplies to make swaps to do these activities at home..do you need help with idea swaps?! Let me know!

Indoor gross motor activities for kids 🤍

Looking for indoor gross motor ideas that actually help kids move their bodies and feel regulated?
As a pediatric physical therapist and mom of two, these are the indoor gross motor tools we use almost every day at home.

From climbing and hanging to jumping and deep pressure, these activities support gross motor development, coordination, strength, and sensory regulation. They’re especially helpful on days when outdoor play isn’t an option.

Every child is different, but meeting their movement needs indoors can make a big difference.

Save this for later and share with a parent who needs indoor movement ideas 👇

So many gross motor skills, coordination, and balance with just one toy! This has been a favorite of ours for over 6 mos now!

Day 29 of Christmas Gift Ideas for Kids 🎄
This toddler gymnastics bar has been one of our most-used indoor toys — and the developmental benefits are huge. Hanging helps build grip strength, shoulder stability, and vestibular input. My 3-year-old loves it… and even my 16-month-old could hang for a few seconds on her own 👏

(And no, this isn’t a risk for nursemaid’s elbow — SHE is supporting herself and engaging her own muscles!)

We use it for core strength, coordination, confidence building, and fun indoor movement all winter long. Plus it folds up in seconds, which is a win for small spaces 🙌

Sensory stepping stones are one of my favorite ways to build balance, coordination, strength, and confidence at home. ✨

You can spread the stones out for a bigger challenge, bring them closer together for beginners, or even stack them into a giant “turtle shell” for extra fun.
Such an easy win for gross motor play, vestibular input, and indoor movement on days you’re stuck inside.

Is your little one into sensory play yet? 🐢💫

Day 15: Christmas gift ideas for kids from a pediatric physical therapist!

I love a good obstacle course and this one has so many variations with cones and bars to be able to move everything all around!

You can have them jump higher, crawl under, run to cones, toe tap, you can even set up a ring toss! So much fun in a little set!

What kind of toys do you want to see next? Let me know!

Day 14: Christmas gift ideas for kids from a pediatric physical therapist.

Bean bags are great for sensory input and regulation strategies. But you can also use them for heavy work, obstacle courses, and strengthening!

Unlike a normal bean bag, this bean bag is overstuffed with food-grade EPS microbeads (for extra sensory comfort!) and covered with organic cotton! And for every bean bag bought, they plant 3 trees! So helping the environment too! We love this one so much, I have a second coming in a couple of days.
Day 7/30 Christmas gift ideas for your kids from a pediatric physical therapist.

Magic bouncing balls! Idk how I just found out about these and apparently they’ve been a thing for a while?! My toddler is going to be so excited. Great for coordination skills, single leg balance, kicking, throwing, catching, and reaction time to catch before it springs!

We LOVE the nex playground and so excited to give it to our girls for Christmas! Ofc we had to test it out first to make sure it was appropriate

#LTKFamily #LTKKids
They FINALLY re stocked and I’m so excited I’m telling the world!

So great for so many developmental skills and baby milestones!

If I could only pick 3 toys for the 12-24 mos age group, here they are!
1. Ball
2. Push cart
3. Nesting cups
For coordination skills, gross motor skills, and fine motor skills!
