Is the Tom Ford belt worth it at $950? I do observe a jump in quality from the $370 Nili Lotan belt, but I don’t know that this refinement is worth $580.

Sometimes, a more casual belt makes a stronger point than something in the middle. Let’s say you’re wearing a maxi satin slip dress. The $60 Boden belt would serve as clear contrast between formal and casual, ultimately adding ease and off-duty cool to the look. The $90 J. Crew belt would be ambiguous: it’s neither refined enough to be an evening belt, nor is it casual enough to contrast with the dress.

I should add that the Tom Ford belt is from the men’s section. The smallest size is 85cm, which is what I wear a lot. I’m a size 26 in jeans. This belt aside, the men’s section has a lot of great options. Hi, Todd Snyder belts.

Are straw and raffia bags ever worth more than $100? Or do you associate them with summery, breezy, maybe even touristy vibes?

Even the simplest natural materials have gradations, and then these materials meet a bunch of different design and finishing decisions. Mango’s bag looks great from afar, but the trim really demotes it. I’d rather get the proverbial market bag than the one from Mango.

Veronica Beard just launched bags last month, and I’m really impressed by what I saw at their store. The finishing aligns with what you see at bags that are easily three or four times the price.

The question, as always, is what sort of refinement are you looking for? And what’s the value proposition for you?

The Target straw tote bag is really compelling for a modern, minimal take on straw. It would lend thoughtful balance to a really dressy or tailored outfit. I’m always looking for ways to cosplay as easygoing, and I’m grateful when Target gets it done.

Is it even fair to say that something like a pearl belt is necessarily Chanel? At what point does a chain become generic? When does a motif become part of a house’s vocabulary?

An at-home jewelry spa is so satisfying.

Soak your jewelry in warm water with a pump of dish soap for five minutes.

Remove any stubborn dirt with a makeup brush or a gentle toothbrush.

Rinse in clean water; I like to use a separate bowl of clean water and whirl the jewels there to avoid anything falling into the sink.

Use a microfiber cloth to dry the jewelry.
