That Massimo Dutti trench is a need, not a want lol. It’s beautifully done, the gun flap is on the correct side, and a very stylish friend of mine recommended it to me. I’m surprised it’s going on sale.

Tweed flows from day to night, as long as we don’t take it too seriously. For day, I wear it with jeans or leggings.

At night, a denim skirt is great, or I find another way to make the outfit less precious: a striped sweater, a tee shirt, a denim button down will all give the tweed life.

Straight coats look amazing with flared jeans or pants. The curvy shape of the leg brings back the body to the outfit, and it contrasts with the straight shape of the coat.

The result? You look confident in your skin, saying, hey, here’s my physicality, sure, but it’s no big deal. I’m also wearing a straight coat, which is more utilitarian, less precious.

In other words, super cool.

I love the way sailor jeans continue the flare of an A-line coat.

To play up the A-line, I button the top buttons and leave the bottom two rows (or more) unbuttoned. Since the coat is double breasted, the front will overlap and keep you warm.

With straight jeans, I love full-length coats, especially ones with a classic fit: shoulders have padding, but nothing dramatic, and the waist does curve in, but nothing exaggerated. The outfit looks tailored, fitted, and so effortlessly polished.

I also love oversized coats with straight jeans: either full-length coats that are worn open, or shorter coats with a cocoon shape (they look like an egg if you squint).

With oversized coats, the jeans provide a sober contrast to all that luscious volume. The juxtaposition makes the jeans look more steady and the coat look more luxurious. The jeans also accentuate the body as such.

Exaggerated shapes are really fun, but most of us want to look like people wearing the clothes, not as an art installation, and not as a football mascot.

J.Crew claims that the tweed lady topcoat has a subtle A-line; I see it as a more traditional tailoring with a subtle nipped-in waist. I would love it with straight jeans.

Here’s how I pair jeans with coats that are knee length or longer:
* if the coat is straight or slouchy, I want a sleek cut for the jeans. I go for straight jeans on the bottom. I avoid too much volume with my jeans or pants.

* if the coat flares out, either below the waist (hourglass) or from the chest down (A-line), I’ll echo that with a sailor jean. Slightly wide, straight jeans also look great, and straight jeans work as well.

Hip-length coats work beautifully with sailor or wider jeans.

I want my clothes to last in terms of quality and cultural significance – in other words, I want them to survive both wear and trend cycles.

To trend-proof your wardrobe, I recommend looking at the history of a piece to check whether the updates make sense.

Yes, certain proportions and colors might cycle out, but they can find their way back. They can be styled differently to adjust to the times.

Pieces that have this year’s “twist” on a classic won’t fare as well; it’s like telling a joke you had to witness firsthand. For example, a cropped trench/barn jacket hybrid mixes two big trends of 2024. It doesn’t make sense now, and I don’t think it’ll age well.

And, of course, pieces that are poorly executed are just stupid.

Characteristics of an old money barn jacket:
* MATERIAL: durable, heavy-duty fabrics like cotton duck or canvas
* LENGTH: hip length
* COLLAR: a pointed collar made of corduroy or leather
* POCKETS: Multiple large pockets around the abdomen and hips for storing tools and small items. At most, one single chest pocket, rather than two symmetrical chest pockets like denim jackets.
* CLOSURE: Front button closure, often with large buttons for easy use with gloves. Sometimes snaps are substituted for buttons. If there’s a zipper, it’s hidden.
* CUFFS: Cuffs may have straps to get a tighter fit that keeps out debris and cold. It’s atypical to have snap cuffs like denim jackets or work jackets.
* COLOR: Earth tones like brown, tan, camel, or olive.
* LINING: May be unlined for warmer weather or lined with flannel or quilted material for colder conditions.
* REINFORCED AREAS: Patches for reinforced at stress points like elbows and shoulders are typically made from the jacket’s own main material.

Here’s what I look for in a puffer for city use:
* Fill power: the higher, the better
* Hood: must be cinchable, bonus: removable
* Drawstring waist
* Cuffs: rib-knit or other snug mechanism to keep cold air out
* Shell: water-repellent, wind-resistant, downproof construction
* Extras: pocket specs, especially for ski lift pass, D-ring for gloves
