Blazers

By Roni

Tailored suit jackets, sports coats, and blazers

You know I love my herringbone wool cropped blazer! (Size 4)I also have an oversized double breasted blazer from BR that have since been discontinued.

That hourglass blazer is insanely nice. The photos online don’t come close to reality.

I tried on both the buttercup peacoat (Double-Faced Wool-Blend Peacoat) and the Oversized Herringbone Car Coat, which I reviewed. I love both

Some really exciting pieces are marked down at J.Crew. These are all solid fabrics, and the proportions look great.

Note: the blazer’s collar leaves a gap at the neck in this photo. If you see it on you, I’d fill it in with a more full collar - say with a button down that has a structured collar or a turtleneck. Love these!

What are some issues you’re finding with blazers? Blazers are complex inside and out. I kept this video to 9 issues, and I can easily add more.

Mistakes covered in the video:
1. Pairing with jeans
2. Sports coat vs. blazer vs. suit jacket
3. Suit jacket pairing
4. Common fit mistakes
5. Collar fit
6. Seam allowance
7. Lapel roll
8. Do not steam
9. Bottom button

Banana Republic has been showing up for us lately with some really beautiful blazers. Aritzia’s wool is great, and their styling is fresh. You don’t want to miss Weekend Max Mara on sale. At least check it out.

I am wearing the Banana Republic Siena relaxed blazer in navy. It’s a great navy, and $150? How? So good

Can we find elevated summer basics at J. Crew? Overall, I was pretty impressed by the linen pieces. The two short-sleeved tops I saw are really, really great, actually – the basics that you want anchoring your outfits.

They took risks with the design. The popover top has a beautifully sculpted collar and a deep neck. Those are features I’d expect to see from a luxury designer. I love the wide hem of the sleeve, too.

I love ruffles, but they don’t really suit my sense of humor. They’re too unabashedly frilly for my personality. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!)

But the earthiness of the linen balances out the ruffles, turning them into a more considered, mature accent. I was very impressed. It’s a lot easier to sell cookie cutter cutesy clothes than pieces that challenge convention. There’s something really J. Crew about a linen ruffle.

To elevate your everyday, some structure is key. Their flimsy linen vests lack structure, but the collar of the ruffled linen shirt will add polish to your look.

How are you liking blazers at Banana Republic?

I am here for the glow up, but that’s not a blanket recommendation. Some styles are a pass, some are okay, and then there’s the one I love (plus more in the same Italian wool).

I’ve seen disastrous linen blazers for more than $1,000. Linen is a casual fabric, so it either needs to be made into a casual blazer like the Polo Ralph Lauren, or extra care needs to be taken.

One option is blending the linen with other fibers, as Max Mara and Banana Republic do. I’m impressed by the Mango options, especially at the prices, wow.

But you know me: I would not recommend something just because there are more expensive things. It has to be worth your time. It has to reflect your dignity.

Add any of these blazers to elevate a casual summer look. Summer does not make it easy for us to look polished, does it?

1. Polo Ralph Lauren: ivy, preppy, old money, all American

2. Mango: sharp lines with a deliciously curved lapel

3. Banana Republic: modern, minimal quiet luxury vibe

4. Weekend Max Mara: a classic, great colors, matching pants, and on sale

5. Kiton: hand made in Italy

6. J. Crew: love classic style with gold buttons?

7. Alex Mill: impeccable proportions for day and a sultry undercurrent for night

Aritzia has a lot of blazer styles, and most of them are a pass imo. The fabrics alone are underwhelming, if not actively offensive, as in the triacetate blend.

The Wilfred Little Cropped Jacket with the simple construction looks more casual because of the top stitching, which are stitches along the edges of the collar and the pockets.

This top stitching reads “casual” in menswear as well. Because this jacket is clearly not going for a formal look, I’m not troubled by the seam allowances showing on the pocket. They just reinforce the easy going vibe.

Comment “links” for my blazer picks!

What’s an instant pass for you? Shoulder pad indentations glare at me, calling for a pass. It’s an easy way to excuse pieces out of your shopping cart.

These issues get worse with wear, especially in blazers made of pliable fabrics (as opposed to stiff materials – they’re less likely to get worse).

An indentation in the collar is also a pass, and same for pads that make an arc shape at the top of the shoulder.

It’s simple to eliminate these pieces as a customer but hard to execute them nicely as a manufacturer under price constraints. I want to give a round of applause to brands that get it right!

Have you purchased anything from ba&sh? How do you like it? Anything you’re considering trying?

I love the off-duty Parisian vibes. The fabric composition looks promising. But jackets are more than the specs.

You have to see how the fabric drapes, whether the arm holes are high enough (they weren’t as high as Celine or high end brands), whether you see the shoulder pads, and how it’s finished in general.

How do you style a blazer with jeans? What’s a blazer, anyway? There are degrees of formality within this jacket type. Convention says that less formal, more rugged jackets do go with jeans, and refined, formal suit jackets do not.

Womenswear offers more flexibility – women’s jackets can look like hybrids of traditional men’s styles, using more body-hugging cuts for sports coats, for example.

Do you like this type of jacket with jeans?

I love repeating this look with the smallest variations. The pastel yellow needs the grit of the grey for contrast; it might otherwise be too twee. Brown would work, too, but would be too stark. I sometimes wear worn out jeans instead of the leggings.

The jacket is from Celine, and it’s a few years old. I found other ones with the same vibe, and some are on sale!

Here are my picks for blazers with some texture, either through the yarn or the pattern of the weave. Plus a Veronica Bears red tweed jacket I just had to add

Replace a denim jacket with a tweed for instant polish. The proportions are really similar, so it’s an easy way to get a bit more formal

Blazer picks! The ones from Aritzia are mostly wool and on sale.

I’m curious what they’ll drop for spring. These are almost sold out
