Straight coats look amazing with flared jeans or pants. The curvy shape of the leg brings back the body to the outfit, and it contrasts with the straight shape of the coat.

The result? You look confident in your skin, saying, hey, here’s my physicality, sure, but it’s no big deal. I’m also wearing a straight coat, which is more utilitarian, less precious.

In other words, super cool.

You can easily achieve this same contrast with any pair of leggings because they show off the leg’s curves.

I love the way sailor jeans continue the flare of an A-line coat.

To play up the A-line, I button the top buttons and leave the bottom two rows (or more) unbuttoned. Since the coat is double breasted, the front will overlap and keep you warm.

The hourglass shape is gorgeous, and it’s something I want to echo with my jeans rather than contrast. Sailor jeans will continue the hourglass silhouette, and the result is a cohesive look.

An hourglass coat will have stronger shoulders and a nipped-in waist. I love the styling here with the slim leather belt.

With straight jeans, I love full-length coats, especially ones with a classic fit: shoulders have padding, but nothing dramatic, and the waist does curve in, but nothing exaggerated. The outfit looks tailored, fitted, and so effortlessly polished.

I also love oversized coats with straight jeans: either full-length coats that are worn open, or shorter coats with a cocoon shape (they look like an egg if you squint).

With oversized coats, the jeans provide a sober contrast to all that luscious volume. The juxtaposition makes the jeans look more steady and the coat look more luxurious. The jeans also accentuate the body as such.

Exaggerated shapes are really fun, but most of us want to look like people wearing the clothes, not as an art installation, and not as a football mascot.

J.Crew claims that the tweed lady topcoat has a subtle A-line; I see it as a more traditional tailoring with a subtle nipped-in waist. I would love it with straight jeans.

Here’s how I pair jeans with coats that are knee length or longer:
* if the coat is straight or slouchy, I want a sleek cut for the jeans. I go for straight jeans on the bottom. I avoid too much volume with my jeans or pants.

* if the coat flares out, either below the waist (hourglass) or from the chest down (A-line), I’ll echo that with a sailor jean. Slightly wide, straight jeans also look great, and straight jeans work as well.

Hip-length coats work beautifully with sailor or wider jeans.
