Style Icons

By WearToWander.Co

Looks inspired by the women who empower and lead the way in fashion and style.

We grew up watching a lot of black and white films at my house, and many of the scenes from those movies still play over in my mind. Outside of books, these films were a portal to other countries and cultures and the idyllic view of each created a narrative in my mind of a world I wanted to explore. There were two women in particular that I loved to watch on screen and they both had the surrname of Hepburn. Tonight’s iconic style focus is on Audrey Hepburn, but a full break down of Katharine Hepburn’s outfits will certainly be coming!

Both on screen and off, Audrey Hepburn’s style is not only still noteworthy but applicable to our modern times. She was at the beginning of a major shift in fashion, and the choices she made created classic styles that we all wear today. If you look closely, you’ll notice that a few of the pieces from this collection can also be found on other style icons I have covered. It’s a testament that shows classic pieces truly never go out of style. There will be small tweaks and trends, but the essentials of a classic won’t change. Who is your style icon you’d like to see covered next?

As I sat down to research our next style icon, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy (CBK), I started thinking about what makes one iconic? I kept coming back to the way individuals impact our lives and how they challenge the narrative.

Walking into my first college art class, the teacher was blasting Janice Joplin and dancing. I had never encountered a teacher that challenged my narrative of "what a teacher should be". JB's paintings were as colorful and wild as her dancing and she was the catalyst to my exploration of art. She's gone now, but the mark she made on my life will always be felt and appreciated. I'm certain there are many other students who would say the same. To me, it's this lasting memory that makes an impact and creates an iconic figure.

Bessette-Kennedy was just that. Whether you realize it or not, her minimalist approach to design and style was the catalyst for so much in the fashion industry. She challenged the industries narrative of a wedding gown with her slip dress. She created sleek looks that left room for strategic accessories and textural pieces that added interest. Twenty-five years since her tragic death, she has remained an influence to many in the fashion world and beyond. Swipe through to see how her style can be incorporated into your wardrobe. If you have a particular fashion icon, drop their name in the comments so I can add them to the list!

After watching and reading speeches given by The Royal Family as well as messages from many of you in the UK, I've noticed that a recurring theme is gratitude. A deep sense of gratitude for the legacy of The Queen and the wisdom of her generation. The mantle has been passed onto King Charles III, and we have the gift of what she left behind. Interviews, books, and photographs give insight into The Queen, and I'm grateful to have them as we all look forward and carry on.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Out of this gratitude came an idea (that also came from hours of talking on the phone with my sister!). Each historical great leaves a fashion legacy as well, and I'd love to explore ways to incorporate them into our modern era. I spent the weekend further researching brands The Queen loved, and am excited to share a new mini series that'll be on Wear to Wander- Style Icons. I'll be sourcing items loved by the style icons you know, and sharing looks centered around them. I'd love for you to share your favorite style icon in the comments section (or in a direct message) so that I can compile a list!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It would leave me again with a deep sense of gratitude.
