My grandfather contracted polio at the age of 3 and lost his ability to walk. When my mom interviewed him for a nursing school paper on his memories of that time, the things he shared were unimaginable. The testing they did to him… they literally hung him in the air and poked needles in him just to see what he could or couldn’t feel, my great grandmother wasn’t allowed to see him but through a glass window for months on end, and he was basically forced into feeling like he had to prove he was “worthy” like all the other kids who were “able”…his stress and self doubt started at age 3. As an adult he was refused work based on his disability. He actually sat at the door of a shop for weeks on end. Bright and early. Greeting all the workers as they arrived. Until finally management agreed to hire him. He eventually retired from that very shop. Today, as I strolled through Target like I usually do, I came across the $3 ornament section. My holiday theme has always been pink and so this little bunny caught my eye. When I reached down to grab her I immediately felt tears welling up. Oh, what this precious little bunny could have done for my grandpa many years ago. To see the very disability that many shamed him for or made him feel as though he was incompetent to lead a “normal” life because of…. beautifully adorning the Christmas trees of many. As if I needed another reason to absolutely love Target..this…this is it. I’m not sure who created these, who did the inventory buying, but whoever it was is phenomenal. It’s little things like this that give ALL people representation. A chance to not feel left out. An opportunity to understand that just because your “normal” is different from someone else’s…doesn’t make it bad. It makes you, YOU. And you are beautiful & deserve to be celebrated exactly as you are. And yes, I snagged this little beauty up as fast as I could. That’s okay because I plan to hang a mirror above and then get some tall candle sticks or vases to decorate it. Until I get the final touches this is what I have put together & I just love it!
