Having COVID was the scariest thing I’ve experienced so far as a parent. When Shepherd was born, his umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck four times. He had a difficult time breathing after birth and his oxygen levels and blood sugars were very low. Our first night after the babies were born, we only had Eleanor to take care of because the doctors thought Shepherd needed a little extra care in the NICU. I was devastated and have never felt more helpless. I was recovering from a c-section and literally couldn’t get out of bed, but all I wanted was to have both babies by my side, healthy and safe. I think I sent David to the NICU every hour to check on Shepherd.

Once his oxygen and sugar levels improved, he was able to come back with us. I was so happy, but terrified at the same time that something bad could happen and that we could lose him.

Pregnancy and parenting after loss is challenging and the anxiety is real. When we all got COVID, my mind went back to the night Shepherd spent in the NICU and relived the reality and fear of all the loss we’ve experienced. I monitored their symptoms diligently, checked their temperatures every other hour, and constantly watched their little chests for any irregularities or difficulties breathing. That’s what the pediatrician told us to look out for most. I don’t think I would’ve slept at all if it weren’t for our Owlet Smart Socks. The socks monitor the babies’ heart rates and oxygen levels and will send an alert if the levels ever go out of the normal range. It also tracks their sleep and patterns in oxygen and heart rates over time. Gratefully, the alarms never went off for us, but it gave me so much peace of mind knowing we would be alerted if anything were to change.

One whole week at home with two of the most precious gifts I have ever been given. This week has been a week of learning- learning more and more about my sweet son and daughter, what they like, what they don’t like, and studying each and every detail on their tiny little bodies. I’ve been learning how to mother them well, how to function on very little sleep, and how to be in the moment and cherish every snuggle because I know these days are fleeting and will be over before we know it.

I still can’t believe I get to be their mom, and even though these days are hard, I wouldn’t trade them for the world and can’t imagine life without Shepherd and Eleanor now that they are here. Every kick and wiggle I felt while I was pregnant with them... it was them all along. Shepherd and Ellie, you are so loved and I can’t imagine a better role or honor than being your mother.
