Want to read a little about a book before you buy? Here are all the books I’ve read and reviewed!

This was my first Ali Hazelwood book and not what I was expecting based on what others have said about her earlier novels. It had very heavy spice (🌢️🌢️🌢️) and not much substance/emotional connection between the two characters until the last 60-70 pages. In my opinion, the physical connection overpowered the emotional connection, so it felt like there was never a true connection between them. There were also moments that felt rushed in some areas such as Rue’s issue with her brother and the overall pace of the relationship. With that said, I absolutely loved the STEM aspect of the book and the company issue and resolution. Hazelwood did an excellent job in tying everything together in a realistic and fun way. Overall, I enjoyed Not in Love as my first novel by Ali Hazelwood. From what I’ve heard, Not in Love was out of her comfort zone which I totally commend her on - I’m sure it’s not easy to write something so different from what you usually do.

Recommend? ✨ If you’re an Ali Hazelwood fan and/or enjoy spice in your books, I would still recommend this one. It’s completely different from her other works which can be a breath of fresh air for the reader.

Darling Girls is a domestic suspense about a maniacal foster mother, three sisters’ strong bond, a discovered body, and a return to the past whether the main characters like it or not. This book will have you wondering: Does the past ever truly stay buried?

If you want to read a book about three badass women who face not only their past but their current problems and are bonded even more because of it, this book is for you. Hepworth tells the story by switching between the three sister’s POVs and switching between past and present with notes from a psychiatrist. I absolutely loved the way she did this because it really helped with character develop development and allows the reader to connect with each character even more. Darling Girls is a much slower- paced thriller than what I’m used to reading (someone called it β€œa slow burn suspense”), but the twist at the end make the slower pace worth it in my opinion. This was my first book by Sally Hepworth, and I cannot wait to pick up another one!

Middle of the Night is Riley Sager’s latest gripping mystery about grief, letting go, and the guilty feelings surrounding a traumatic event. Written as a dual timeline switching between the present and past, July 1994 flashbacks are perfectly woven into the present, providing excellent character development and aiding the overall mystery of the story. It’s not a crazy twisted thriller like what I experienced when I read Lock Every Door but is a slow burn mystery that picks up pace with more action in the last few chapters.

π‘πžπœπ¨π¦π¦πžπ§π? ✨ I highly recommend as a page-turner with light-hearted elements not typically seen in thrillers. It offers a great change of pace from the darker mystery thrillers.

⚠️ Trigger Warnings: murder, rape, death, violence

James is a reimagining of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn, told from James the slave’s point of view.Β  If I had to choose five words to describe this book, I would choose: thought-provoking, suspenseful, heart-breaking, heart-warming, and exciting.Β  I absolutely couldn’t put it down and when I finished it, I was in a book slump because of how impacted I was by the story.Β  James’s POV is very matter-of-fact and in a somber tone – simply sharing his experiences as a slave and how he uses that to navigate being a runaway slave and later hopefully a free man.Β  The way Perceval Everett writes James’s POV is utterly captivating to the readers.Β  Slaves were viewed as stupid, but James contradicts this thinking with the level of knowledge and wisdom that is on display throughout the story.Β  While I haven’t read Huckleberry Finn, I’ve been told it’s a lighter, more humorous read. I think reading it coupled with James would add an extra layer of depth and perspective to the original story due to the compelling way Everett portrays James’s character.

π‘πžπœπ¨π¦π¦πžπ§π? ✨ James put me into a book slump in the best way possible. It’s a story that I was so captivated by that I find myself thinking of the story and the characters over and over.Β  I have been recommending this book to people even before I hit the halfway mark and will always recommend it.Β  This book is a piece of literary fiction that I hope becomes a modern classic.

The Silent Patient took a long time for me to get into it but once I was, I couldn’t put the book down.Β  It was full of twists and turns, questioning every character you met.Β  I was so intrigued into Alicia as a human, trying to figure her out as much as Theo was.Β  This book has you asking yourself β€œwhy?” repeatedly as you read.Β  I also loved Alicia’s POV; it’s spoken through her diary and her art since she refuses to speak, and I feel that it spoke volumes compared to what she would have said if she was talking.Β  Where the book fell short is that I didn’t feel it fully explained why Alicia was silent and why Theo wanted her to talk – she’s the silent patient, but to me, there was a missed opportunity to explain that part of the story more. With that said, it didn’t stop me from giving The Silent Patient 5 stars.

Recommend? ✨ For all the hype this book had on Bookstagram, BookTok, and everywhere else, I’m surprised that I didn’t pick it up sooner but I’m happy I eventually did.Β  While the first half of the book was slow for me, I couldn’t stop turning the pages and reading.Β  The twists and turns and omission of information really made the book for me. As someone who regularly reads thrillers, the ending was fresh and not like something I’ve read in other thrillers, which I quite enjoyed.
