Loving Owen’s little reading nook in our pantgray

Let’s make a Hidden Toddler Reading Nook in my pantry!

I’ve been wanting to do this project for a long time. Owen loves little, cozy spaces but our open floor plan makes those hard. I tried a teepee but he just ripped it down immediately trying to climb in. So instead I decided to turn the floor of our walk-in pantry into his private reading nook.

Ultimately I had bigger plans for this space but Owen threw me some curve balls: I wanted to hang string lights on the shelf but he kept ripping them down. Same with any cute art I tried to hang on the walls. Thankfully I found a perfect toddler & baby bookshelf that was the right size and untippable!

What do you think? What other toddler-safe options should I add?

How to Remove Toddler Stains

Let’s be honest, toddlers are messy! They spill, roll, smear and stomp through EVERYTHING! And when I posted a video last week from Owen’s play date at the Morton Arboretum, I received dozens of messages about how muddy his outfit got.

And I get it. Muddy toddlers make the calmest parents anxious. So I knew I had to share a few tips I have for removing toddler stains to save you all some of the stress that comes from toddler messes.

All you’ll need is a stain remover (I swear by Puracy), a stain brush, some washing soda and a little vinegar.

I let the mud stains on Owen’s outfit last week sit for a few days without treating them too just so you can see how effective this method is. All I do is spray on stain remover, let it sit five minutes, gently scrub the stains with my brush, then add to the laundry with some washing soda (has a higher pH than baking soda) and a little vinegar. I usually do a soak cycle in my laundry too just to ensure the stains come out. Then I air dry to ensure the stains are gone (once they’re in the dryer, they really set in) and that’s IT!

Have any stain removing tips? I’m always on the lookout for more Mom Hacks!

Everything about becoming a Mom is both beautiful and challenging. Often at the same time. And one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in this early toddler stage is finding nutrient-dense snacks that aren’t super processed but that Owen will actually eat. So for any Mamas struggling with this too, here’s a guide of what’s working for us now…

My Toddler’s Favorite Snacks (18+ Months)

1 Coconut Yogurt Bark. This has been trending a lot on TikTok and is a great, cooling summer snack. Feel free to use coconut or regular yogurt. I just spread it onto a tray with parchment paper and dot it with yummy bites like freeze-dried or fresh fruit, chia seeds, honey or even chopped nuts. Freeze for an hour then break up to serve.

2 Collagen Fruit Smoothies. Another great summer snack, I take @perfectsupplements grassfed collagen, a milk of choice (we prefer raw milk), a banana, some strawberries or blueberries and some chia or flax seeds. Blend and serve for a sweet snack that’s still full of protein. Add coconut oil or a nut butter for added fat if desired.

3 Tart Cherry Gummies. I make these with molds at home to cut down on the sugar and ingredients. Just tart Cherry juice and grassfed gelatin. I make a big batch every few days and give these to Owen when he needs a quick snack full of amino acids and glycine.

4 Seaweed Nori Sheets. A great crunchy way to sneak in extra greens into your toddlers dirt. I carry these in my diaper bag everywhere for a quick, compact snack.

5 Lesser Evil Lil Puffs. We alternate between these and the @serenitykids puffs. Both are made from cassava flour so are gluten-free with some vegetables thrown into the mix. Expensive (considering how quickly Owen wolfs these down) but delicious and fun for him to eat.

6 Salmon Fish Roe (Ikura). This was one of Owen’s first foods (as recommended by @westonaprice) and still one of his favorites. It’s a quick, easy way for me to pack extra omegas into his day!

My Toddler’s Favorite Toys (18+ Months)

Wooden Threader. A great, Montessori toy that facilitates hand-eye coordination and motor skills. Also very portable!

Bubble Machine. An obvious favorite — toddlers cannot get enough of bubbles! I’m pretty sure bubble was Owen’s third word after ‘Dada’ and ‘Mama’.

Light Switch Box. Owen has an affinity for switches and nobs so this box has been a great toy for him. And keeps him away from the stove nobs and power strips we have around the house 💪🏻

Ride Along Cars. Owen received this fire truck as a gift when he was born but only recently has been big enough to enjoy it. He loves pushing it around more than riding it. We also have a plastic version that he adores too.

Indestructible Books. My friend told me about these in March after I complained about the money I was losing to books. Despite my best effort Owen went through a phase where he’d rip, chew and tear every book in sight. These have saved us so much money and are still the books he asks me to read him the most.

Play Arches. My MIL gifted these arches when he turned one and they’ve been a perennial favorite since. He’s now big enough to stack them and carry them around the house too. I suspect we’ll get a lot of use out of them in the coming years!

Poppers. The ultimate distraction. As you can see, ours is pretty worn down from love! Another great fidget toy to help with motor skills and keep him entertained during restaurant and coffee shop stops. I always have one packed in my diaper bag!

Wood Shape Peg Board. A gift from my cousin, this toy has become one of Owen’s favorites! It’s helped him learn more complex problem-solving skills as well as shapes and colors!
