It took me a few years to find masc fits for fall and winter but I’ve really found what works well for me! I’ve been able to build a capsule wardrobe of basics that then I can pair with a sweater or rugby top that’s dressy enough for work and comfortable enough to actually hang out in all day. For me it looks like:

1) a neutral sneaker like my go to Nikes

2) men’s althletic fit jeans - just trust me, athletic fit really helps accommodate hips and thighs 😉

3) sweaters in basic capsule colors

4) or if I’m feeling more color I LOVE a color block rugby shirt!

Masc Lesbian fall basics 🏳️‍🌈

A few weeks ago Alexa and I took a trip to our local Uniqlo to stock up on some basics as we’re heading into fall and winter here in the Midwest. Uniqlo has been my favorite store for finding basics specifically for layering.

Here’s what you need to know:
• I shop exclusively from the men’s section
• tops I’m a size small
• bottoms I’m a size medium
• I’m 5’6 and typically wear a 10/12 from the women’s section

Bottoms 👖
I specifically was looking for wide legged ankle length pants and picked up two denim and three corduroy options. I can dress the corduroys up for in-office days or dress them down for everyday wear. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE how most of the pant options have a drawstring in the waist. This helps ensure you’re getting the perfect fit every time.

Tops 👕
I refreshed my flannel collection. I’m actually horrified at how old and gross some of my flannels were.

Sweaters 👔
I picked up a new sweater to add to the few I got last year. I like keeping these in rotation because they are great to throw on over a collared shirt to dress up and they are SO COMFY

Let’s talk masc style for fall!

I find the easiest place to start building a versatile fall and winter capsule wardrobe is with a few neutral colored sweaters. I LOVE this unisex one from Uniqlo because it’s not super heavy so I can wear it alone or with a jacket over top. It’s also light enough to wear a collared shirt underneath for a polished work look. I have this sweater in 3 different colors and with each one can make several polished and versatile looks!

I also always get a lot of questions on my silver chains. I’m giving a few options below based on different budget points. I first had the basic ones from Target then Alexa got me the JC Penney ones for Valentines last year for more of a splurge option. Madewell is a great midpoint price wise.

Taking your wardrobe from femme to masc--This process can be daunting, but here’s what worked for me ✨👇🏼

✨Experiment with different stores, styles, and fits to see what resonates with you. You might be surprised what you end up liking!

✨Don’t be afraid to order online and return things if you are nervous about shopping in person or have limited access to stores.

✨Don’t feel like “masc” means you can only shop in the men’s section. I shop both sections and combine things in ways that feel like me.

✨Learn how men’s sizing works and try several different brands to see what fits work best for your body. I find athletic fit is my key to jeans, and stores like Hollister fit my shorter torso better than others.

✨Invest in a capsule wardrobe of simple neutral pieces that you can combine in different ways. This makes building a beginning wardrobe less cumbersome and expensive.

✨Invest in neutral sneakers and statement pieces like simple jewelry (I like chains and watches) to make a polished look out of simple pieces.

✨As you feel more comfortable add in statement pieces like bold colors and prints.

✨Don’t be afraid to copy exact outfits you like from others. This helped me a lot in the beginning when I was still figuring out how to put things together.

Florals for spring? Groundbreaking 🌸

Bringing out some floral patterns as I’m willing spring to show up here in Maryland.

I’m at a point where I feel really solid with my basics wardrobe and am starting to pepper in more pop pieces. Got so many compliments on this floral button down from jcrew last week!

Now that I’ve built my capsule wardrobe out I have all the basics I need to mix and match different looks. I love how this casual day date outfit came together with all super comfy pieces that look polished and even make my torso look way long than it actually is.

This is my first pair of Dickies and I have to say for $40 they are a steal! I paired them with my go to Uniqlo unisex Crewneck sweatshirt (one of four colors I own) and I’m ready to go!

Loving this outfit for a winter wedding ✨

Here’s my crash course on where to shop for formal wear. These stores are based on my experience shopping there as a mid-size person (US range for midsize is 10-16. I typically wear between a US 10/12 )

Suits- Macy’s has some stellar options in the women’s section (have you seen my velvet suits? They’re both from Macy’s). Express has a great selection of more masculine suits and a lot of fun colors. If you want to go the custom route Suit Shop is gold

Pants: my go-tos for nice dress pants are Zara , H&M , and Express. Go ahead and get yourself a black and navy pair of dress pants. You’ll thank me later.

Tops: this one can be tricky especially if you have a short torso like me. Two options- get a shirt from the men’s section from a store like Express and just accept that you’ll have to roll the sleeves or get it tailored or try pairing women’s dress shirts with men’s pants.

Accessories: I love love love collar clips! The one I’m wearing is from Wild Fang but also have found a ton of cool unique ones on Etsy. These really make it feel like I’m elevating a look.

Casual masc fashion basics ✨

I’m all about buying a few functional pieces that make me feel confident and fit together in a ton of different ways. Uniqlo crewneck sweatshirts are my go to for a comfy winter work from home look. They can accommodate a collared shirt underneath for a dressed up look, or be worn by themselves for a simple but polished look.

I love that the sweatshirts are unisex and come in a variety of unique colors. For my own capsule wardrobe I have one in blue, pink, beige, and green.

Some tips to keep in mind when shopping in the men’s section

Sizes are measured by waist and length (ex I’m wearing 33/30 pants right now)

Not all fits are created equal. Relaxed fit and/or stretch are a good option if you have a curvier frame

For sweaters, my biggest issue has been in finding ones that fit my torso length. Look for men’s cropped sweaters, they fit shorter torsos much better

To keep things extra cozy at home—I’m always wearing my Bombas slippers

Cropped men’s tops are a thing now!!

Nobody is more excited than me that men’s cropped tops are currently in. This is perfect for someone like me that loves shopping in the men’s section but often finds that the length of the tops are too long to flatter me in the ways that I want. A cropped look from the men’s section ends up landing right at my hips resulting in a nice streamlined androgynous look.

For bottoms I’m loving these cinched ankle pants from Target. I wear these weekly and can’t wait to grab them in additional colors.
