The Camera Gear We Packed for our South Africa Trip

My absolute favorite thing to do on vacation? Take pictures! Photographs are the perfect souvenir, especially if your suitcase space is limited. Pack your camera, and you’ll be able to capture all sorts of mementos and souvenirs to bring back and share with friends. For this trip, Kyle and I packed both of our camera bodies. We’d been using the Nikon D3300 Digital SLR Camera for years but upgraded to the Nikon D750 camera body for this trip. The D3300 is a great starter camera for bloggers and the one I recommend to all my family and friends. Additionally, we packed three lenses to swap between the different cameras. We brought the Nikon 50 mm zoom lens for animal photography on safari. The Nikon 35 mm lens is ideal for outfit photos and portraits, in addition to being a great everyday lens for general photography. And this Rokinon 12 mm F2.8 wide angle lens is great for landscape shots, architecture photography, and couple selfies.

This summer we’re taking a family trip to Newport, RI! I’m planning a sailing tour, visiting the mansions, walking the Cliff Walk, and dining al fresco on some fresh local seafood. I just started shopping for our trip with this haul of nautical-inspired looks from @ullapopkenusa (sizes 12-38+). Which are must-pack outfits, and which should I pass on? Dress size 20/22 - I went with my larger size in this like I usually do in woven fabrics and button-up styles at Ulla Popken, but this is runs large so go with your smaller size if between sizes.

Navy tee size 16/18 and skirt size 18. This is my second one of these double-layered tees, and I love them! Soft stretchy jersey, high quality look at feel, and a great elevated staple with a modest scoop and elbow-length sleeves. This tensely skirt gives the look of denim but is lightweight with elastic in the waist and ties to secure a snug fit.

Button-up shirt size 20/22, navy tee size 16/18, and ivory crop pants size 20. This button-up also runs oversize. The jeans have a mid-rise which I belted for a more secure fit, but I love the cut and length of them. A great alternative to denim capris or crops for spring/summer. Stretchy too!

Striped hoodie size 20/22. Runs small with very little stretch. Lightweight and thinner than regular sweatshirt material.

Woven beach sweater size 16/18 has an oversize fit. You don’t have to layer any underneath because it isn’t see-through. Lightweight and soft silky knit. Really love this piece!

If you’re looking for plus size high rise jeans, check out the Ab Fab collection from Kut from the Kloth at Nordstrom. I’m wearing the size 16W here, and they run a little big. These jeans have a good amount of stretch, but they don’t get baggy or saggy throughout the day. This is my second Kut from the Kloth order because after buying my first pair last summer and absolutely loving them! They come in both straight and plus sizes, with more limited options in plus.

Lena Dress size 18 gifted by Lane Bryant 🌈🌸

This Lena Dress is cut just right for my style and proportions. I love pastel colors and floral prints for spring, and this dress has plenty of both. The surplice neckline is cut well and doesn’t fall open or pull away at the sides like some do. I still layered a cami underneath for more coverage, but you wouldn’t have to as the V is more modest here. The flutter sleeves are cut wide to accommodate my thicker upper arms, and the skirt is full to skim over my hips without clinging or bunching at the sides. At 5’4″, it falls just above the knee on me, which is my perfect length. This dress would be such a stunner for Easter and spring/summer showers and weddings. But for me, it’s so in line with my signature style that I know I’ll wear it for everyday with sneakers and a denim jacket or for day dates like I’ve styled it here.

I styled my Lane Bryant Lena Dress with a pearl headband and matching pearl cluster earrings from Lele Sadoughi. I love her statement accessories, and I always wear this set a ton in the spring.

As for my shoes, I’m wearing my well-worn Rothy’s Point Flat in Blush Pink. I bought these washable flats a few years ago, and they’re my favorite walking flat for the spring and summer. Rothy’s are known for being uber-comfortable, sustainable, and also chic. They have a new iteration of their Point called the Rothy’s Knot Point with a knotted detail on the toe. I’m on year four of wearing these flats, so clearly they wash up well in the machine and haven’t lost their shape after all this time. In addition to the chic Point, Rothy’s also has some sweet round-toe ballet flats and maryjanes as well. So if you’re looking for comfortable everyday walking flats, I love my Rothy’s!

My Kate Spade Carlyle Bag is past season, but they have some super cute springs bags you could sub in instead.

When the calendar says it’s spring, but the weather says otherwise…🙃🥶I wore this outfit twice this week - on Thursday night for dinner with a girlfriend and then yesterday afternoon for lunch in Detroit with Kyle. The colors are super springy, but the styling with the duster coat, booties, and sweater keep it transitional.

This satin slip skirt is on sale at @shoparula for $28.99 from $69.95. It’s taken me some time to warm up to this trend. Column shaped skirts have always been intimidating for me because I grew up seeing them in magazines and catalogs on slim figures that looked nothing like my own. A-line and skater silhouettes have always felt more accessible for my shape.

But part of my body confidence journey means allowing myself access to trends that I previously thought weren’t meant for me and my body. I’m grateful to plus size brands providing us with these trends so we finally can give these styles a try. Even so, I went back and forth about ordering this skirt for more than a month.

I ultimately decided to give it a go because I love the color, and while the fabric is lustrous and elegant, there’s also casual styling potential. Yes, I have lumps and bumps and cellulite, and yes, you can see some of that through the skirt. But this is my body right now, this is a style I want to experiment with right now, and I’m giving myself permission to wear it.

I LOVE how this outfit came together. The colors, the layered necklaces, and the effortless silhouette tick every box for me. I bought this skirt as a spring essential I plan to wear on heavy rotation and style a variety of ways over the coming months.
