We love the bunk room at the @whidbeyislandfarmhouse ... it even has a stunning water view! The kids love it and it fits all our many @5girlsoneboy grandbabies ... all that said it is utter chaos by the time we are done ... pillows, blankets, throw blankets EVERYWHERE!! And to top it off ... making built in bunkbeds is a pain in the #%€*•#¥ ... especially when you are turning a vacation rental house in one day for your next guest!! Someday we will figure out a better solution like @beddysbeds ! Why are kids such slobs ... even better question is why doesn’t it bug them to live in a chaotic mess? This beauty was one of the first items purchased for the @whidbeyislandfarmhouse remodel! She traveled all the way from the east coast to join us here in the PNW! She was originally slated to be our kitchen sink but due to a few technical issues we were not able to use her there so we improvised (the name of the game in remodels and construction) and moved her to the kids bath where she now is the star of the show!! / Project: @whidbeyislandfarmhouse

Happy day after!!! We’re slowly easing back into reality and planning our re-entry into normal life ... although that’s hard with kids home from school and the chaos of Christmas still spread all over the house!! It’s always weird when a big holiday falls mid-week ... we are planning to do a little “work-from-home today” to catch up on things that got put on pause before the big day! The “crud” has hit our household and I am patient zero! I will be spending the majority of the day laying on the couch in front of the fireplace 🔥 doing nothing .... something I am just NOT good at. My husband is heading outside to hang lights and says he has a great creative lighting plan he’s going to implement which includes red and white lights, stakes, a walkway runway, etc! If you know me you know I like the simplicity of just white lights ... so It’s taking everting in me not to get up and go direct this light install! But, I just don’t have it in me and am going to let go so this year there will be lots of light creativity on the outside of our house! When you come visit us please follow the lit runway to the front door for your safety!! Who else is a control freak? Are you a “no shoes in the house” family? I’m TRYING to convert my family to this policy but I’m struggling to get everyone on board! We have a mudroom off the garage where everyone enters and it seems so easy to just pull off your kicks right when you walk in the door but I can’t get them to do it! I’m thinking I’ll buy everyone really great slippers for Xmas and maybe that would entice them? One challenge we’re facing is that everyone stores their shoes in their respective rooms and when they get dressed for the day, they are able to peruse their footwear options. If you’re a “no shoes in the house” family ... where do you store all your shoes? Are you just in the habit of carrying them in and out of your closet for storage and just putting them on right before you walk out of the house? Do you end up with piles of shoes by the door? That might drive me nuts!! What do you do if you have a party ... does everyone remove their shoes? Give me all your advice!! / Project: @whidbeyislandfarmhouse

We are pretty traditional holiday decorators for the most part but one thing we don’t do is put a topper on our tree ... BUT .... somewhere between the tree farm and getting the beast upright in the house yesterday (3 person job ... she’s sooo heavy & about 13-14 feet ... we have really tall ceilings) .... the top of the tree broke and looks like big stubbed toe at the top! So guess where we are headed today? Out to look for a tree topper we will probably only use 1x!! What do you put on top of your tree? Star? Angel? Nothing? Other? We wanted a stand alone tub and shower so we opted for a single vs double vanity and squeezed the toilet between the vanity and tub! It’s the time of year when I start giving myself a pep talk when it’s time to take a shower ... the chill in the air messes with my head! Once I’m in the steamy hot water 🚿 all is good, but the pre & post shower struggle is real!! We have heated floors, so that helps a ton but how amazing would it be to have warm snuggly heated towels when you stepped out of the shower? What a luxury! One of the most challenging parts of furnishing the @whidbeyislandfarmhouse was finding a table big enough to accommodate our crew! Short I’d having one custom built, the only retail outlet we could find one big enough and in the style we wanted was at Restoration Hardware. We can get 14 around this bad boy (we could have used one that sat 20+ but didn’t have the space) and it’s perfect for meals, puzzles and competitive family game nights!! / Project: @whidbeyislandfarmhouse

If you’ve been around here long enough you know we love carving out drop zones / mudroom nooks where ever we can, especially in tight situations where we can’t fit a full size stand alone mudroom. We love the holiday season and decorating for Halloween and Christmas comes pretty easy for me but the “in between” is more challenging. Who doesn’t love a gorgeous dramatic staircase? We all do! Especially one with an amazing light fixture dangling over it!! We get so enamored with these staircases we tend to forget about the daily challenges of living with these design choices ... case in point: changing the light bulbs!! We have this exact light fixture soaring over our stairs at the @whidbeyislandfarmhouse and there’s already a bulb out that needs to be swapped and we can’t get anyone to volunteer their acrobatic skills to get it changed!! Thankfully, there are still 4 other working bulbs to carry the weight until we figure out how to get up there to swap it out! Maybe that’s the lesson here ... make sure to do a multi bulb fixture over your stairs so when you are lazy like us, you have some runway!! Who changes the bulbs on your family?
