3 SHAPE RECOGNITION ACTIVITIES FOR TODDLERS!

Engaging toddlers in shape recognition activities fosters their cognitive and motor skills while enhancing their creativity.

In the shape stamp painting activity, children refine their fine motor skills by gripping and stamping shape toys onto paper, boosting hand-eye coordination. Simultaneously, they learn shape and color associations, nurturing their cognitive development.

The shape puzzle rice hunt promotes tactile exploration as they dig through rice, honing their sensory abilities. Identifying and placing puzzle pieces sharpens their problem-solving skills and spatial awareness.

And last but not least, the gross motor Simon Says game allows practice in using their listening skills and promotes physical activity. Jumping, hopping, and running to specific shapes requires balance and coordination and is the ultimate energy buster!

PIPE CLEANER ACTIVITY FOR THREE DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS!

These three pipe cleaner activities are perfect for toddlers AND preschoolers!

18-24 Months: Pipe Cleaner Colander - Toddlers will develop fine motor and color recognition skills as they play with the Pipe Cleaner Colander activity. They can stick colorful pipe cleaners into the holes of an upside-down colander, fostering hand-eye coordination and creativity in a safe and engaging way.

2-3 Years: Pipe Cleaner Fishing Color Match Fine Motor Activity -
For the 2-3-year-olds, the Pipe Cleaner Fishing Color Match is a fun choice. Parents twist pipe cleaners into fish shapes and add water to a bin, creating a fun water-based activity. With jumbo tweezers, toddlers 'fish' for the pipe cleaners, refining their fine motor skills while practicing color identification.

Preschool ages 3 years+: Pipe Cleaner and Straw Bracelets -
Preschoolers aged 3 and up can dive into the world of fashion and fine motor practice with Pipe Cleaner and Straw Bracelets. Using colorful pipe cleaners and cut straw pieces or beads (always be cautious of choking hazards!), children will thread the straws onto the pipe cleaner until it's full. With your assistance, they can tie the ends together to create fun bracelets, adding an extra touch of creativity to their self-made accessory collection.

HOW TO START ACTIVITIES WITH YOUR KIDS! ⬇️

Obviously I'm a HUGE advocate of at-home kids' activities and providing your children with opportunites for exploration and discovery everyday. However, I also know that I have a background and a lot of experience in childhood education. I have a masters degree in Elementary Education and was a third grade teacher before having babies! I have put in A LOT of time and practice to get to the level of comfort and confidence I have to carry out these learning activities with my girls each day.

Those years of first-hand experience reduced the stress I have towards teaching my children pretty much down to nothing. I know I can do it. BUT I WOULDN'T FEEL THAT WAY WITHOUT TIME AND PRACTICE. Like everything, you need to jump in, try, and simply do your best.

Start small and celebrate small victories. Have a goal of actively engaging your child for 3 minutes and then when that's achieved, try for 5 minutes and so on overtime.

The small victories will compound, your child will learn expectations, and your confidence will grow!

My top advice: Begin early with basic sensory exploration for infants, gradually incorporating more materials and concepts as they grow. Focus on sensory exploration and motor skills. Then, super simple activities like color and shape recognition and basic counting can start between 12-24 months, then evolve to more complex versions as your child becomes comfortable. For preschoolers, advanced storytelling and math concepts can be introduced.

Always prioritize positive reinforcement and adapt activities to your child's pace and interests. This approach fosters a love of learning and prepares your child for school, building their skills and confidence step by step.

1. Sticky Leaf Wall - Recommended for ages 18-24 months - Encourage creativity in 18-24 month-olds with a sticky wall leaf activity. Children decorate the 'tree' with leaves, fostering fine motor skills and sensory exploration.

2. Leaf Cookie Cutter Painting - Recommended for ages 2-3 years - Engage 2-3-year-olds in a colorful leaf cookie cutter painting activity. Tape roll paper to a flat surface, provide fall-colored paint on paper plates, and hand children leaf-shaped cookie cutters. Your little artists will dip them into paint and stamp them on the roll paper, creating a vibrant leaf collage!

3. Cotton Ball Tree Painting - Recommended for preschool ages 3+ - Parents draw a tree on cardstock and glue cotton balls as the tree's leaves. Using colorful water and eyedroppers, children enhance the tree by squirting fall water colors onto the cotton balls

Roo loved this math learning and sensory activity using the 1-100 Pop It fidget toy and our jumbo eyedroppers! Yes, it’s super fun and engaging, but you know mama snuck in some learning too.

STICKY RINGS!

Or as Jimmy suggested to name it…Sticky Mat Activity Wall Art 😆

Our one year old is really starting to show interest in all the activities her big sister does daily, so I decided today was all about Mo. 🥰

All you need is contact paper and those little stacking tower rings that most of us already have.

Activities don’t need to be hard or overwhelming to set up. The point is just getting those little fingers moving!

At first, Mo was really into just feeling the sticky paper. But then, she got the hang of taking the rings on and off the wall. Aaaand then, she ended up just ripping all of the paper and tape off the wall. 😅 Fingers were moving throughout it all, so I can it a success!

CUTTING BOX! ✂️

Give your child some freedom with cutting, but in a super controlled way! I threw some scraps in a bin, modeled proper scissor use, reviewed expectations and rules, and let Roo go to town cutting until her heart was content.

This was Roo’s first experience with scissors. I researched and found this pair of @fiskars training scissors on Amazon and couldn’t be more impressed! They have a lever that helps little ones get the feeling of the cutting motion. Roo went back to this activity throughout the day and spent a total of 2.5 HOURS cutting. Cross my heart…this activity set a new record in our house!

Watching her confidence build with this new tool was so fun to see! And she had an absolute blast feeling like such a big kid.

TEACHER HACK: Put a sticker on your child’s upward facing thumb as a visual reminder of a proper scissors grip!

DISCLAIMER: This activity should be supervised at all times. Please use your judgment as to whether or not your child is ready to handle scissors.

TISSUE BOX COLOR SORT! 🔴🔵🟡🟢

Color recognition and some fine motor practice got us to naptime today! Mo actually just turned 19 months (disregard the voiceover 😅) and is totally capable of sorting her colors!

Out of the four colors, this sweet girl can only say “bueee”, but you better believe she understood the directions of this activity and completely ROCKED it. She sorted each color correctly…and then started putting them in the wrong places on purpose…IYKYK. 🙄 Regardless, proud mama right here! 👏🏼

OATMEAL CARD DROP! ♣️♦️ The simplest things in life tend to be the most fun and this card drop activity is no exception. Simply cut out two slots in the top of an old oatmeal container with a precision knife, outline the slots with red and black permanent marker, and model sorting the playing cards by color with your child. Your overall involvement depends completely on your child’s age/ability. Mo (18mo) needs my constant support as we are just starting to identify colors. Roo (3.5yo) is completely independent with this activity and it serves more as something to just keep her busy (which is important too!) The sweet spot age for this activity would be right in the middle around 24 months. However, you can adjust it for younger children easily by cutting out one slot, not outlining it with any color, and simply focusing on dropping the card into the container, which is a huge skill in itself! 👏🏼
