If it’s ugly: paint it.

Last fall while I was renovating my kitchen, I decided to transform my dark speckled granite countertops into a white carrara marble finish simply by painting them! It took me three base coats of white primer, and then I added “veining” by dragging a skinny paint brush dipped in charcoal grey paint and misting it with water for a feathered effect.

But won’t they get damaged? That’s where the epoxy topcoat comes in. The epoxy adds a shine and protects the new “marble” from everyday kitchen use. I’m almost one year into using mine and they’ve been holding up great!

How to design and install picture frame molding!

It’s time to makeover another white box in the house and this time it’s all about the home office! I’m so excited to add character into this space and that starts with some custom trim work from @novobp @ornamentalmoulding

The first time I ever did picture frame molding I was stumped in the design phase, so today I want to pull back the curtain on my process. Mocking things up in canva and then using consistent spacing are my top tips to get that designer look for any DIY custom picture frame molding project.

The fastest way to make your walls look freshly painted? A little pen that hides every chip and scuff in seconds. No paint cans, no brushes, no mess.

I keep a couple on hand (one for trim, one for walls) and label them with my Bluetooth label maker so I never mix up satin and eggshell. It’s weirdly satisfying.

From a weed-filled rock bed with a few sad pine trees… to this.

Two tons of rock, sixty pavers, nineteen bags of sand, and a few too many trips to @loweshomeimprovement later—this backyard is finally finished.

The turf is down, the pavers are perfectly spaced, and I can officially say this one was worth every bucket of granite.

So much progress in the office today! Step one was installing the chair rail. I measured 32” from the floor which is where the top of the chair rail will sit. Next it’s time for the picture frame boxes! I’m using a 2.5” space around mine so I grabbed 2 pieces of scrap wood in this depth and placed the trim, leveled it and then nailed it in place. Tagging everything I’m using for the chair rail and picture frame molding here!

The first time I added molding to a room (this one!) I spent days agonizing over measurements and how to create my boxes.

But here’s the thing: the box size is less important than the spacing around the boxes. That’s the measurement that needs to stay consistent for a streamlined and timeless look.

The easiest way to do this is to use something as a spacer. For me I had some scrap floor boards that were 3.5” and they worked perfectly. I’ve seen people even use remotes! Just keep it consistent above, below and in Bergen your boxes.

My other tip is to design the boxes for the wall. If you have doors and windows those are going to most likely dictate your boxes. Sometimes it’s easier to start on those walls since placement and sizes are a bit more decided for you.

I’m all about working smarter not harder, especially with a large scale renovation like a kitchen. Exact color caulk takes a step out of the process by allowing you to color match your caulk to your paint color. And it couldn’t have been easier. Here’s all you need to do:

- snip the caulk bottle open
- add 20 ml of your paint to the caulk (measuring tool included)
- screw lid on and shake for 60 seconds
- add provided thickener
- add lid and shake for 60 more seconds
- wait 30 minutes
- caulk as you normally would

This $12 find gave me a smooth finish, cut hours off my painting project and left no mess. Seriously - I didn’t even need a drop cloth. After this, I may never go back to a paint roller.

Transforming my existing black bathroom vanity to a wood finish. For the first step I used retiqueit liquid wood and put 4 coats inside and outside, as well as all the doors, drawers and shelves. I needed almost two full jars for this! Next step will be staining! Linking everything here for you!

You don’t always need a landscaper—you just need the right tool. 💪🌳

I used the Kobalt Pole Saw to clean up the big trees on my property, and let me tell you… it made trimming tall branches so much easier (and kinda fun?).

Week 9 of the primary bathroom renovation saw the good, the bad and the ugly. Some positive moments were installing my last piece of crown molding (ahem did you see the fancy return I made?!) and getting my new faucets installed. I picked these ones because I love that they have a vintage flair to them. These are part of the @kohler artifacts collection and are available at @loweshomeimprovement

The agony over a paint color continues but I think I have it narrowed down to two picks: light grey and drop cloth.

Renovations usually come with some hiccups and this one is no different. Stay tuned to see how I navigate this tricky situation with the countertop company.

Lots of questions about my light up level! It lights up green when thighs are level and yellow/red when they’re not. It’s been so amazing and could not recommend it enough!

No need to try and read the moving bubble in your level anymore! Franklin sensor’s light up level will turn green when things are level and red when they’re crooked! Perfect for tight spaces or low lighting areas where reading the bubbles is tough. So excited to use this for my diy wainscoting project!

Yes, you can remove backsplash without removing drywall. 👏 I was determined not to derail my kitchen reno by tearing into the drywall—so when the hammer and chisel weren’t cutting it (literally), I headed to Lowe’s Home Improvement and grabbed the Kobalt Oscillating Saw 💙

This was my first time using an oscillating tool for drywall and it was super straightforward. It’s allowing me to make more even cuts than I’d get by sawing by hand. I found that going over each area a few times got the best results. Definitely a great tool to have on hand for any DIYer!

Same table, new look! My black dining table was in great shape but really didn’t fit the color scheme in my dining room design. Rather than buy new, I gave my existing table a wood look with a simple weekend DIY using RetiqueIt liquid wood. The best part is it required zero heavy sanding or stripping, it was basically just painting!

If you’re unhappy with the finish of a piece of furniture but you love the bones, just know you have options! The finish I used is the pecan stain.
