Can you paint while pregnant? Here’s what I’ve learned (and what I actually recommend): When I first found out I was pregnant, I had projects on my to-do list. Like… a lot of them. And I wasn’t about to give up painting cold turkey. But I did want to be smart about it. So here’s how I handled it—and what I’d recommend to any other pregnant DIYer: 1. Fashion Choices I wear a full paint suit to keep chemicals off my skin—and a hood to protect my hair and neck from paint mist or primer splatter. And when it comes to a mask, a basic one won’t cut it. I use a HEPA-filter respirator to protect against fine particles and lingering fumes. Comfort isn’t the goal—safety is. 2. Roll vs Spray Spraying might be faster, but it throws paint particles everywhere. Unless you’re wearing a proper mask, spraying runs a much higher risk during pregnancy. If I spray, I take lots of breaks (like every 5-10 min), but I think it’s best to stick to rolling or brushing for more control and fewer airborne fumes. 3. Watch your Primer! Primers can be some of the most intense products when it comes to VOCs. I only use low- or zero-VOC water-based options, and only when absolutely necessary. Typically, I make Dakota do this one for me. 4. Ventilation is non-negotiable!!! I always set a box fan in the window, facing out, to pull fumes outside. Then I crack another window or door to keep air flowing through. This makes a huge difference in how long the smell lingers. You don’t have to hang up your paintbrush just because you’re pregnant—but you do have to get a little more strategic.
