MINI BOOK REVIEWS

I recently finished a few thrillers recommended by bookstagram friends. I thought I’d shared some quick reviews today.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lies He Told Me by James Patterson and David Ellis

This one was recommended by @maddies.reads, and it was exactly what I needed at the time - a quick, bingeable thriller. I finished it in a single day. The chapters were small and told from multiple POV (a personal fave). The plot was twisty enough to keep me guessing.

The Butcher and The Wren by Alaina Urquhart

I love a good serial killer thriller (that’s not as weird as it sounds). This was a very quick read that kept me engaged. I liked how the killer wasn’t a surprise and has a POV throughout the book. The twist didn’t fully work for me? But I’m intrigued enough to read book 2!

Head Cases by John McMahon

Head Cases follows a group of FBI agents with unique skills who solve tough cases that no one else can. Someone is killing other serial killers (🤯), and this group is tasked with finding them.

Overall, I really liked this one. I’ll never say no to a book about serial killers, and this was a fast-paced read that kept me engaged. I loved the PAR unit members and their mysterious backstories.

Head Cases reminded me a lot of Criminal Minds, but if the team was lead by Dr. Spencer Reid (which is a huge compliment BTW).

This book comes out on January 28 - definitely recommend checking it out! (Thank you @minotaur_books for the #gifted copy)

Happy 2025! I’m (finally) feeling motivated about posting bookish content again, so I’m excited for the new year. I also came up with some book-related goals for 2025:

📖 Try more fantasy novels/series
📖 Read 40,000 pages (so I can focus on larger books, instead of a books finished goal)
📖 Listen to 500 hours of audiobooks
📖 Work on reducing my unread books, whether on my shelves, my NetGalley, or my audiobook apps

I also have a non-bookish goal:
💪🏼 Attend at least 200 Burn Bootcamp classes

I’ll check in periodically to update on my goal progress!

🎨 All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker

This will surprise literally 0 people, because I haven’t shut up about this book (or his previous book). It was truly 10/10, no notes.

The writing was beautiful, the characters were wonderfully flawed, and the emotions were raw. This book emotionally traumatized me, and I’m not yet recovered.

If you’re one of the approximately 10 people who hasn’t read this book yet - do it ASAP!

I’m not currently reading any non-fiction this week, so it’s safe to share my top non-fiction reads of 2024! This year, I couldn’t choose one. It will surprise absolutely no one, but both of my favorite non-fiction reads in 2024 focused on wrongful conviction.

📚 THE SING SING FILES by Dan Slepian

I cannot recommend these books enough - they will make you angry and sad, but you’ll learn a lot.
