Back to school shopping is expensive enough when you’re just buying for your own kids, but this year I’m seeing prices that make me want to double check I didn’t accidentally grab gold-plated pencils, so we are doing a donation to the local school district to hopefully help keep the kids stocked up. I also got the chance to talk with @gewhitmer about what these rising costs mean for real families and how it’s hitting households hard before the first bell even rings.

Beach day with my bestie — matching Costco chairs from our Mother’s Day hubbys, Costco cookies courtesy of Emily (bless), and a drip sandcastle setup from the Easter Bunny. Honestly the beach is so much easier now than it was even just a couple summers ago. And today? The vibes were immaculate. Brought me right back to being their age, toes in the sand, sunscreen in my eyes, growing up on the shores of Lake Huron. Now we’re here on Lake Michigan, but somehow it feels the same. Nostalgic and new all at once.

This. This is summer.

PB&Js and cookies at the water’s edge with your best friends. Swimming for hours, getting sand and seaweed in every single crevice, and taking a car nap on the way home while the AC tries to cool down sweaty, sunscreen-sticky bodies.

This is the summer I grew up with. I was raised on the shores of Lake Huron—and while this isn’t the same beach, we’re on Lake Michigan now (bigger, colder, west side of the state), the feeling is the same. Being in the sun, sand, and water takes me right back to childhood… except now I’m on the other side of it.

I’m the mom.
The snack packer.
The sunscreen applier.
The unofficial lifeguard.
The one counting heads as they pop up from the waves and yelling “stay where I can see you!” every 10 minutes.

And honestly? I’m living my best life.

Matching swimsuits with my best friend, planted in our matching Tommy Bahama chairs (thank you Mother’s Day hubbies), Dr Pepper in hand (supplied by the friend who actually remembers things), and teaching our kids how to build drip castles like it’s a sacred rite of summer.

If a perfect day exists—this was it. Even if I’m still pulling seaweed out of my hair on the drive home. Swimsuit is old Old Navy!

Realistic parenting at the splash pad sounds like: “Stop running,” “Where are your shoes,” “Don’t drink that water,” “That’s not our towel,” and “We’re leaving in five minutes” on repeat for two hours straight. But hey—they’re exhausted, semi-clean, and technically hydrated. So I’m counting it as a win.

Life hack I didn’t even think would work but I was desperate—hung disco balls around the pool and gave it a week. Usually we’re swatting horse flies the whole time we swim but in the last week we’ve only seen TWO. TWO. I don’t know the science, I don’t care. I’m calling this a win.

GRWM for a zoo day… aka let’s pack snacks, dig a literal fossilized apple outta my backpack (was that from last summer??), and throw together lunch from the remnants of a half-eaten salad bar. Will I make it out the door in time? Unclear. But I will try, because top-tier zoo mom hack: get there at opening. Cooler temps, animals are active, and the kids haven’t yet declared mutiny.
