QUIT FRYING YOUR CURLS!

This is me, a curly hair stylist, standing in front of you asking if you’ll just give me a chance to help you love your curls instead of pretending they don’t exist.

I have SO many curly hair tutorials and tips, but I think what makes curly hair feel so difficult at times is the amount of effort that goes into refreshing curls.

So what if I told you that you’re making it *way* harder than it needs to be?

I’ve been using curly products that are water-based, which essentially means that water will activate it and it will easily rinse out in the shower and create minimal residue leftover (unlike other products that aren’t water-based!).

But this ALSO means that they reactivate every time you go to refresh your curls, so you don’t need to add much more product for your curls to keep looking incredible. We want to keep it simple and quick!

If you want the water-based hair products I advise almost every client use for curl refreshing, comment REVIVE and I’ll send them your way!

If you’ve tried EVERYTHING to maintain your curls overnight and feel like nothing works, you are so not alone!

It feels like the internet is filled with tips and tricks and 20-step overnight routines.

What if I told you that using between 1-3 products can help you to protect your hair and keep your curls intact?

And chances are, you may not even need all 3.

But testing these three methods and sticking to one or two that work best on your curls (because every head of curly hair is different) will SAVE you from having to breathe life back into curls every single day!

So comment OVERNIGHT if you want links to these three items and tell me which method works best on YOUR curls!

Trying to care for colored curly hair isn’t NEARLY as difficult as it’s made out to be.

You deserve to have your hair the color you want without fading the gorgeous shade you colored it, sacrificing the health of your hair, or the definition of your curls!

Yes, you CAN have it all!

Dyeing curly hair simply means taking a few extra steps to ensure your color and your curls are both getting the care and attention they need to last as long as possible (whether you need your curls to last a whole week or a color to last months!)

Here is how I’d advise a client post-coloring to care for dyed curly hair…

🫧Wash less frequently and use luke-warm water. Hot water will fade and dry your hair out.

🧴Find color-safe products that don’t strip your hair, and actually protects your hair color.

🚿Moisturize your hair on wash days. Use a hydrating conditioner, then follow up with a leave-in.

💤Protect your curls overnight by sleeping with a silk scrunchie, pillowcase, or bonnet.

TLDR: keep your hair moisturized, don’t overheat it, and handle it with care.

Comment COLOR-SAFE for a link to my favorite color-safe curly hair products!

Half up curly hair style tutorial!

I love styling YOUR hair. But MY hair is usually fully down, embracing its curl or in a bun if I need it out of my face!

So sometimes I do this combo–my curly, half up hairstyle!

It’s quick, it’s easy, it takes 10 seconds, and it gets my hair out of my face. Remember when doing this style:

1. Use a soft hair tie so you don’t damage your strands.

2. Don’t pull the hair all the way through the hair tie during styling and allow the ends to twist back into the hair tie as you pull it over the bun again.

3. Rewet any pieces that need to curl up a tad more then add some dry shampoo and hairspray as-needed.

And voila! You have a curly hair style that’s both cute and effective!

If you have curly hair DON’T do this:

🪮Don’t rip through your hair when brushing it. Make sure the tool you are using is flexible and can work through the tangles easily.

🚿Don’t go to bed with your hair wet. I know it’s hard, but try to make sure your curls are completely dry before bed time. Mold, breakage and frizz can happen and we definitely don’t need that.

🧖‍♀️Don’t use a regular bath towel. Microfiber or 100% cotton are your hair’s best friends. If all you have is a cotton t-shirt, that is totally fine to use!

🧴Don’t use products that aren’t water soluble. This is a super awesome way to weigh your hair down and leave product on your hair for wayyyy longer than you think. (No, double washing probably won’t do the trick)

💧Don’t squeeze all the water out of your hair before styling. You need the water to evenly distribute the product and squelch it in! Your hair is still absorbing the water on its surface, so soaking that product up will help shape it! Squeeze water out on the LAST step of your hair products as you form the curls.

What did I miss?! Tell me in the comments what your “heck nos” are when it comes to curly hair care!

My wavy hair refresh. Using Innersense Air Dry Cream. #wavyhair #copperhair #longwaves #foryoupage #fyp
I’ve 👏 tried 👏 it 👏 ALL 👏

These are the best curly hair products. The ones I come back to over and over again. The ones I rely heavily on when clients come to me. The ones that will likely NEVER leave my curly hair product rotation.

For a few reasons:

- They’re water soluble. That means they come out when you wash it with water and work again when you wet your hair to touch it up. This is by far the healthiest way you can style your hair (Unless you don’t actually use any product at all).

- They ACTUALLY remove buildup. When you aren’t using water-soluble products, I don’t think most people realize just how many layers of products from YEARS of use sit on your scalp or strands. Plus, if you live in a place with hard water, using a heavy-lifting clarifying product is essential to making sure your curls look their best.

- They make defined curls clumps that are the same size. Uniform curls that are properly clumped (without wasting time doing it unevenly by hand) are a huge piece to reducing frizz!

MAYBE…

Bear with me.

Maybe, it’s worth learning how to style your specific hair type so that it can clump properly and evenly and then find products that work for your hair type so that things like definition and excess frizz AREN’T problems for you.

But that’s just my opinion.

I’m not a fan of putting in hours and hours of time and energy into frying hair off instead of spending the same amount of time learning how to refine what you naturally have in a way that is so uniquely beautiful to you!

So if you want to learn how to define YOUR curls, follow along and check out my suggested products and techniques!

What if I told you curly hair isn’t supposed to look exactly the same every single day.

Strands will be grouped differently, product may be applied slightly more/less, and you likely don’t blow dry the same sections for the same amount of time in the exact same order.

The truth is, there is no way to successfully replicate the curly hair look you created yesterday, the day before, or the day before that.

But want to know a secret?

Everything in life is like that. We’ll never be as young as we were 5 seconds ago, every day our clothes wear a little more, and no, you’ll never find that perfectly comfortable spot in bed again after using the bathroom.

The truth is, nothing in life will ever be the same as it was yesterday.

So instead of cursing curly hair for not being different than literally every single other thing in life…

Why not enjoy the differences you see each day?

And if you don’t love how it came out, there’s always tomorrow 🩷

I swear curly hair is SO deceiving.

When hair is wet, half the time it looks like there isn’t a curl to be seen, but the magic in styling is the process of drying.

THAT is when the curl magic happens.

I know it definitely depends on the type of hair whether curls are visible when wet, so tell me… if you have curly hair, can you tell when it’s wet?

Comment WASH DAY for a link to all the products I used in this video!

Let’s talk about curly hair wash day.

This is your moment to help your hair look as great as it can for however long you choose to go between wash days. That can mean a day or two, but for many curly-haired individuals, this is more like 4-7 days.

So wash days are BIG and can help you have an easy hair week or a week filled with curly hair refreshes that feel… overstimulating to say the least.

Because I need client hair to come out phenomenal every time, I found a “recipe” through some of my go-to curly hair products that never miss.

Here is the overarching order:

1. Clarifying shampoo wash.
2. Standard shampoo.
3. Condition. (Let sit on hair for 5-15 mins before rinsing)
4. Creams. (Styling + volumizing)
5. Brush + section.
6. Gel.
7. Finishing spray.
8. Diffuse.

It’s a long process, but for only having to do this routine 1-2 times a week, it’s more than worth it!

The best part? If you use water-soluble products (like what I showed in this video) when you refresh your curls, all of the products will reactivate and act as if you freshly put them in 🤭

So this is my go-to curly wash day routine for most curl-types. What questions do you have?

YES, YOUR HAIR BRUSH MATTERS.

If you want these brushes, I can send you a link–just comment HAIR TOOLS

So you’re probably wondering what the difference is between these brushes and why it matters which you use.

I’ll clarify!

Let’s start with @thewetbrush. You may be brushing your hair dry sometimes, but because you’ll need to detangle your hair while it’s wet most of the time, it’s worth getting a wet brush! The water in your hair allows the bristles on this brush to slip through and bend when knots become too difficult. This means you won’t be ripping your hair out while brushing and reducing the amount of split ends brushing can create!

The difference between the two @bouncecurl brushes is exactly what their names suggest!

The Bounce Curl Define is for more coarse curls, creating sections for the strands to cling to and form with. Which in turn, creates a more defined curl!

The Bounce Curl Volume has ridges tighter together for tight curls that can clump together and weigh down hair.

Both are incredible and make a MASSIVE difference on my clients’ curls!

So… which brushes would you use on your curls?

There are some things while styling textured hair that are non-negotiables and other things that can not only sabotage the entire process, but also damage your hair…

As a curly hair stylist, this is what you SHOULD and SHOULD NOT do:

Do…
✅ Flip your hair over
✅ Use a high speed & low heat setting
✅ Scrunch diffuse to create more volume

Don’t…
❌ Keep your head upright the entire time
❌ Use high heat just to dry faster
❌ Move the diffuser around once it’s in your hair

The recipe for great curls is volume and definition while minimizing the amount of frizz created as much as possible! And by doing these three things when styling, I’ve found a ton of success! (which makes for amazing curls if I do say so myself 😏)

Using gravity to your advantage really helps to create and hold volume curly hair needs so it isn’t flat on top. By not burning your curls into place with a high heat setting, you’re allowing your curls to dry in a form that naturally happens with your unique curl pattern. And by starting with drying the roots first, your hair will have MUCH less frizz and be able to hold the shape the mids and ends create better!

If you need a solid dryer or diffuser, I definitely have a few favorites (it feels like I tried them all!).

Comment VOLUME to get a link to some of my go-to dryers and diffusers!

Washing My Hair. The hair stylist way! #washinghair #washinghairroutine #wavyroutine #hairroutine #ohiohairstylist
You asked for my top 10 curly hair tips and tricks from a curly stylist, so here they are!

1) Double cleanse your scalp. The first wash isn’t actually washing anything–the second one is!

2) Get yourself a Bounce Curl Brush. See my last post if you need more info 😉

3) Ditch products that leave buildup and weigh down your curls. *LOOK FOR WATER-SOLUABLE PRODUCTS! (I have a ton listed in my links if you need ideas)

4) Don’t overcomplicate hydrating your hair. Use water and lock it in.

5) Skip washing post-workout and pull out your diffuser to refresh instead. Curly-haired people hardly have time for all of that.

6) Find a curl-specialist that knows how to actually cut and style curls. The process IS different and makes a difference. I promise.

7) Choose products that will actually fight frizz, not add to it. ! (Again, I have a ton listed in my links if you need help with this)

8) Diffuse your hair on high speed, low heat.

9) Keep your product routine simple and consistent for optimal results every time.

10) Sleep on a silk pillowcase to avoid hair breakage.

SO, what other questions do you have for me as a curly hair stylist?!

No, this isn’t just brushing your hair.

This is clumping your curls.

Ensuring every clump is a uniform size.

AND brushing out any knots.

All in the same swipe.

When styling curls, time is of the essence. You need to get your hair prepped, products in, and scrunched while it’s still soaking wet (cue the wet scrunch sound).

This tool will help to define each individual curl without needing to finger curl each individual strand. Which not only saves time, but also means…

LESS FRIZZ.

I have never seen more defined curly hair as when I use this brush. I don’t think I could go a day without it and as a curly stylist, I will recommend it to every single one of my clients every chance I get!

If you want the link to this brush, comment BOUNCE CURL and I’ll send it your way!
