As a curly hair stylist, if I could give you one simple piece of advice, it would be this:

Before drying your hair, make sure your curls aren’t frizzy BEFORE drying. Because if there is any sort of frizz prior to drying, when it does finally dry it’ll amplify that frizz three-fold.

Believe it or not I have also struggled with loving my own curly hair in the past (surprise!)

Truthfully, I had no idea how to style it, what products to use, how it should be cut, how to manage the frizz, nothing.

I was so frustrated and conceded to feeling like my hair texture was “too difficult” to manage and picked up a straightener for the first time.

What is so crazy to me looking back is that managing my natural hair is SO MUCH easier than using heat to damage it daily and force it into an unnatural pattern only for it to frizz back up midday and avoid being able to do simple little things like dance around in the rain.

I’ve spent YEARS learning to crack the code on every curly type out there and started sharing the information as far and wide as I can spread it

Because if I had someone helping me like that way back then, I never would’ve wasted a dime on a straightener.

Does this look glamorous?

For me, it absolutely is.

It IS a lot to manage, clean, organize, sanitize, style, etc behind the scenes, but truly I can’t fathom my life without being a curly stylist.

It feels like I was meant to do what I do and if this is the price I pay to help others feel happy in the hair they have…

Create long-lasting curls at home ⬇️

Clarifying your scalp and hair is a MUST. It helps remove buildup and impurities to reset your scalp for when you apply products post-wash. You’d prefer to draw a masterpiece on a blank sheet of paper, right? So erase what’s taking up space on the page before starting again.

I try to take my time while styling curls. Yes, I realize not everyone has the time to take an hour or two, but if you take that time, your curls will hold SO much longer. Rushed styling means rushed results. This can mean frizzy, lifeless curls… and I don’t want that for you.

This one may come as a surprise… I never air dry curls. Yes, I have the hood dryer here in the studio, but when you’re at home, diffuse as long as you can to help set your cast. And when it’s good and dry, have fun breaking the cast!

Maintaining low porosity hair should not feel like an uphill battle all the time. All curly hair is so beautiful and can be maintained!

So without further ado, here are some of my favorite low porosity hair maintenance tips so you can love that hair you have:

Clarify regularly. I’m talking every 2-4 weeks here (If you have hard water, DEFINITELY every two weeks!). The goal is NOT stripping the moisture while removing any built up product.

Deep treatments regularly. Replenishing the moisture in your hair is so necessary for this hair type, so utilizing a deep treatment can help your hair remain smoother and softer.

Use water soluble products to prevent buildup. If water can’t penetrate the product already on your strand or the strand itself, your hair won’t get any of the amazing benefits from any products you use when you wash it! Make sure you use products that allow water to get through it for when you wash!

Let the water soak into your hair for 3-5 minutes before cleansing. Your hair NEEDS water. Let it soak up as much as possible before taking it away!

Curly haircut ≠ normal haircuts

More often than not, stylists less familiar with curly hair will create shelves of layers instead of blending each layer to the length.

This can look bulky or create a less-than-ideal shape when the hair is in its natural state.

I also want to emphasize how specialized stylists (like curly stylists) try to take the time to walk a client through styling their hair to ensure they can recreate the look at home every day if they’d like.

I love reshaping my curly hair clients, but I need to address something…

You’re, in fact, seeing this correctly, I am NOT using a comb in my client’s hair.

And you won’t see me doing that in really any of my other videos either.

I don’t like using a comb on curly hair because it not only makes the hair too tight so too much hair will come off after taking scissors to it, but it also frizzes up the curls so I can’t find what those natural patterns will do and where they’ll sit after cutting.

9 times out of 10 a comb will DISRUPT a curly hair cut.

Although I use combs every now and then, I plan to leave them out of the majority of curly hair cuts.
