The truth is... I used puddle jumpers with both my kids. I didn't know the harm until Carter’s ISR instructor told me prior to lessons. Puddle jumpers hold children in a vertical position that doesn't promote independent swimming skills. Many children become confident because of the device, not because they've learned how to safely move through the water.As an ISR instructor, I will require families to discontinue puddle jumper use during lessons so we aren't teaching two conflicting motor patterns.If your child absolutely needs flotation outside of lessons, a properly fitted, Coast Guard approved life jacket is the safer option.Some families also choose a swim pack, which is designed to allow a more natural swimming position while skills are developing.No flotation device replaces close, attentive adult supervision.
