This plant stand was looking a little tired, but a few coats of @rustoleum spray paint gave it a whole new life. 🌿✨

If you know my work, you know that I hate painting natural wood, but sometimes there’s a scenario that calls for it. I chose a soft green that feels timeless and I love how it turned out!

A few spray paint tips:
✔️ Clean thoroughly before painting.
✔️Use a good primer so that your paint bonds well
✔️ Use light, even coats
✔️ Allow proper drying time between coats

👇The sandpaper grit guide I wish I had when I started refinishing furniture:

🔨 80 Grit (Coarse)
Use for:
• Removing thick paint
• Stripping heavy finishes
• Smoothing major damage or uneven surfaces

⚠️ Leaves deep scratches that must be sanded out with finer grits.

🪵 120 - 150 Grit (Medium)
Use for:
• Removing stain, varnish, and lighter finishes, or scratches left by courser grits
• Cleaning up rough wood after stripping
• General smoothing
• Preparing wood for final sanding

✨ This is often my starting point when a piece isn’t heavily painted.

🪵 180 - 220 Grit (Fine)
Use for:
• Final prep before most hardwax oils and furniture finishes
• Smoothing bare wood

✨ One of my most-used grits.

🪵 320 - 400 Grit (Very Fine)
Use for:
• Final sanding before clear finishes
• Between coats of finish (gently scuff sand)

Be sure to take into account the type of wood you’re working with! You might not need to start with such a rough grit for softwoods like pine.

Here are the steps I used to restore this vintage buffet!

✨Sand (this was 75% of the work)
- start with a rough grit (80-120) depending on what you need to remove
- I used a sandpaper block, carbide scraper, and mouse sander for the tight corners
- Sand again with finer grit (220)
- Light hand sand with 400 grit
- Wipe down with damp cloth
✨Prestain
- Don’t skip this step, this is what helps your stain absorb evenly!
✨Stain
- I used 2 coats of @minwaxusa English Chestnut
- sand lightly with 400 in between coats
✨Seal
- my first time trying this and I’m now a BELIEVER! I used @zinsser Seal Coat Shellac, it goes on like water and dries fast, but makes that top coat go on like soooo smooth
✨Top coat
- @minwaxusa wipe-on poly is my go-to. Wipe on with a rag and add a second coat if needed
✨Drawers
- I used @howard_products wood conditioner on the inside of the drawers (bonus is that it smells AMAZING)

A little refinishing ASMR for you ✨

Here are the steps I followed for this solid wood piece:
- clean surfaces
- Sand (I avoided chemical strippers with this project), and use carbine scraper for corners
- Wipe down with damp cloth
- Brush on a coat of @howard_products Wax-N-Feed wood conditioner inside drawers
- Apply a layer of @minwaxusa Prestain

I had picked up this glass vase with the cutest ruffled rim a while back, even though I didn’t know what I wanted to do with it yet. But then I stumbled on this black vase from Magnolia and knew I wanted to recreated the bubbled paint look! The “hammered” @krylonbrand spray paint did the trick. I did add a coat of primer beforehand as well. P. S. I might be addicted to flipping vases now 😂 See the link below for the cutest faux hydrangeas!
