Unfuss your pearls the easy way – layer with a scarf. This look would be beautiful with beads or with chunky chains, too, because the jewelry itself is half showing. It's not that serious. It's also a formula you can repeat when you're in a rush. My scarf is 90cm or 35", and all the scarves here are that size.

My favorite linen button up is Banana Republic's for the fit and the crisp fabric. J.Crew's Baird McNutt Irish linen is softer and has a drapier flow, I also love that one. I'm wearing Gap jeans in a wash that's OOS, but their new washes are great, too. They look a lot like Khaite's Dane jeans ($580), and the measurements are almost identical. I'm in 2.5" heels, and I'm 5'7".

I get compliments every time I wear this denim shirt: it's fitted, so it's a bit unexpected for denim to look dressy, or for a dressy shirt to be in denim. Great collar, high armholes. Size up if you're between sizes.

Banana Republic's cashmere is that quiet win that looks fresh, resists pilling, and gets priced fairly. I will say that my sweaters have gotten more fluffy, but they show surprisingly little pilling considering how much I've worn them. I'm starting here with fall's three most important silhouettes. The V-neck is coming back, which means more options for those of us who've been wondering where these went. The oversized, hip-length crewneck will still be going strong this season, but I wouldn't spend above these prices for it. The neck gets a lot of attention this fall, from funnel neck coats to turtlenecks. These will feel luxurious, and they'll layer over shirts nicely.

BR exclude leather, suede, and cashmere from their Friends & Family sale. Here's what I'm loving, including softly gathered loafers that looked flawless in person (online photos show bad ruching on one pair but good on the rest). I love their suede skirts – the suede is rich and even, very velvety, and the execution was excellent in person.

The BR x La Ligne collection just dropped with a mix of hits & misses. The tailored pieces are, unfortunately, made with too much polyester in the blend. Instead, the button ups are excellent. The collars have the shape and body I love from BR's shirting. The stripes are aligned and symmetric. The hidden button placket dresses them up, as does the double cuff that you can fold up. They're long enough to have the tails show when layered under generous sweaters or hip-length jackets. They'd be great over tight capris to give you coverage in the back. The bandanas have the wearable stripe patterns that make them easy to style – they go with denim blues and neutrals. The twill weave means they have body, which looks more expensive than comparably priced scarves at J.Crew.

My favorite tote from Gap's new line, and I love the bandana prints. It all goes back to 1990s Chanel. If you're craving a pop of color, this pattern delivers that joy with more subtlety and sophistication. This pattern has the right scale for the bag so you get the details, but it's not too busy.

I’m wearing size S in all, and I’m 5’7”. Aritzia passes on Finch and the funnel-neck Hemlock, not Davis; Sézane's Jonas and Clyde are single-breasted, so not true trenches but well made. Arnaud takes style cues from Saint Laurent – love.

Suede is more durable than the internet thinks: brush after wear, two light coats of protector, reapply when water stops beading. The cables are defined because merino keeps it sharp, not blobby – that's what I'm looking for. Suede that's worth it.: shoes. My Quince loafers have insanely beautiful suede for the price. I'd pay 3x as much for them. The lining is smooth, and the insole is cushioned – I've walked hours in them. The Madewell look and feel impressive in person. You can't see the inner reinforcement on them – they're smooth. The Anonymous boots show off the lush suede with their slouch. Really excited for these.

Take a 90s icon – the J.Crew Rollneck – and combine it with fall's favorite styling cue from Chanel. I sized down to XS in the tiny rollneck; I'm usually size S. But! I'm small chested. Size up if you're more curvy. I also sized down for the barrel jeans – I'm wearing a 25, but my usual size is 26. I'm 5'7". I'm including striped pants to get the look from the J.Crew catalog. The cotton twill coats have body and drape without bulk, and the leather pieces – goat suede and lambskin lined in viscose – match specs that others sell for two to three times as much. One caveat: check the suede collar points and cuff edges before you cut the tags, because I found one jacket in store with uneven pile at the collar point.

These are the earthy version of the funnel-neck and quarter-zip shapes everyone's charging multiples for fuzzy mohair and yak blends, generous collars, and on the Juliette, buttons instead of a zipper. The oversized merino styles (Léonard, Théo, Edgar) have real weight and structure, so they can overwhelm a petite frame; the Sophie's fitted bodice is the easier way into the volume. As an alternative to the Virgil, I'm including a Gap chunky cotton sweater with a drop shoulder, substantial collar, and similar waist shape (modern and straight rather than cinched in).

Note that several of this season's styles have very voluminous sleeves – beautiful on their own, bulky under a sweater or jacket, so go straight or slim if you layer.
