Fall's biggest It-bag is the soft flap bag. Chanel's version is decidedly more ladylike than a messenger (see flap shape, handle attachment). Here are my picks with creative details. Coach keeps edges thin partly by skipping a glazed lining and sticking to one compartment. Massimo Dutti's got oversized stitches that remind me of Fendi's Selleria series. Vestirsi gives a soft, luscious leather, and the hardware has a mirror-like finish. These all sing in the same choir as Chanel, they're not doing a karaoke version of Chanel – which I definitely appreciate.

Bags (and one wallet) that pass my glazing checklist: thin, even edges with no drips or glops, even where they bend. Coach keeps edges thin partly by skipping a glazed lining and sticking to one compartment, and The Horse proves $240 can hold its own next to The Row, not to mention out-finish the $4,590 Balenciaga. My Quince bag looks great after a few months of heavy wear. There are pin-sized scrapes at the corners, and that is it. Love these Frame jeans! TTS: I'm in a 26, my usual size, and I'm 5'7" (170cm). The length is perfect on me and would be great as a crop if you're taller. If you're shorter, you may need to hem them or pin the back (pinch inside the center back, about 2" up from the hem, and pin horizontally with a safety pin). The Polo denim shirt is very fitted. I'm in a size 4. My scarf is vintage Hermès.

These wide-leg jeans end up being too long for a crop on me but too short for full length. I'm 5'7", and they've got a 28" inseam. That's usually a crop for me, but these also have a lower crotch, so that means we're starting to measure the leg from a lower place. 28" here would be 29" on a tighter cut. I'll crop them – they're a raw hem, so that's easy. I'm in a size 26, my usual size. The Polo denim shirt is very fitted. I'm in a size 4. My scarf is vintage Hermès.

Margaux's got the rare crinkle flats I am happy to recommend: the texture is consistent through the shoe. Veronica Beard's heels are positioned for balance, and the shape is ultra precise. I'd recommend them at full price. I cannot believe how well designed the Vionic mules are – many brands struggle to make a heel look this refined yet modern. Aquatalia's waterproof loafers have a classic lug sole, not too chunky to feel like those enormous Pradas from 2020. I love a lug sole loafer for travel, especially, since it's both comfortable and polished. Vince gets the ruching right, and the loafer is all leather. Elleme uses the same soft weaving technique that vaulted Bottega Veneta to the legendary status we know today. Manu Atelier's belt bags are the only ones I recommend for that Birkin-esque look because their materials + craftsmanship truly showcase a compelling vision.
