Powder Bath

By RutledgeCollective

Powder Bathroom Design + Details

Today’s lesson: this is why the powder bath is taking forever.

If you’ve been hanging out with me in my stories, you might remember the first towel ring I ordered. I hated it the second it arrived. So I sent it back and ordered THIS one, which I absolutely love. But the install? I am so dumb. I put it on the wrong way the FIRST time, had to take it off, and start over. Sometimes the simple projects humble you.

Worth it though. This brass towel ring is exactly the right finish for the space and brings in another touch of warmth against the wallpaper.

Day 5 coming soon, accountability partners. Don’t let me start anything new. Save this for the rest of the journey.

This is what I live for.
The small spaces that everybody walks past but nobody expects. A bold wallpaper, a fluted vanity, the right mirror and suddenly your whole house feels different.

If you’ve been sitting on a wild idea THIS is your sign. Just go for it!

They’re not “out”… but I’m never installing them in another home. Not mine, not a client’s, not anywhere.

Here’s why:
✧ They block way too much natural light
✧ They feel heavy in almost every space
✧ You can never fully open the window
✧ They date a home faster than people realize

What I’d choose instead: layered curtains, Roman shades, woven shades, or even a beautiful window film if privacy is the goal (like the Artscape Old English I used in my powder bath 🐆).

Whimsical, layered, and light > heavy and dated every single time.

The plantation shutters in my powder bath were giving me nothing - no personality, no privacy, and definitely no magic. #ad

So I swapped them for the Old English window film from @artscape_design_studio and I have zero regrets.

The Old English pattern is so timeless. It looks like actual leaded glass and adds so much character to the
space without feeling heavy or dated.

Here’s why this worked perfectly for my space:
✔Keeps all the natural light - just filters it beautifully
✔Blocks the view in without feeling dark or heavy
✔Easier to install than wallpaper - seriously took me 30 minutes
✔No tools, no adhesive, no damage - completely renter friendly
✔The way the light glows through that pattern is something else entirely ✨

If you have a window you hate, a space that needs privacy, or you just want to add something unexpected and beautiful - this is your sign.

I’ve linked the Old English window film directly in my LTK shop so you can shop it instantly @Shop.LTK

Obsessed with this window film from Artscape — it gives privacy AND looks like real etched glass. Total game changer for the powder bath and so affordable! 🪟

Today’s progress: installing these glass shelves above the toilet.

If you’ve followed along for a while, you might recognize them. They’re the same ones I installed in our primary bathroom a while back. I keep coming back to glass shelves because they let beautiful wallpaper actually be SEEN. Solid shelves would have blocked half of these gorgeous cheetahs and that’s just a crime.

And these are very reasonably priced from Amazon.

Drop a 🤍 if you’re officially my accountability partner. We’re styling these shelves on Day 4!

The vanity in our powder bath is such a statement piece — and I get asked about it constantly! The best part is the countertop and cabinetry you hardware comes with it. All you need to add is a beautiful faucet and you’re all set! 🖤

Day 8! I took one curtain panel and made it into two short panels to create a whimsical cafe curtain.

Today’s mission: swap the outlets and switches to black so they actually blend into the wallpaper instead of fighting it.

A few real talk takeaways:
	1.	The GFCI outlet was the hardest part. If you’ve ever done this, you know.
	2.	The dimmer switch was a $25 piece that took about 15 minutes to install. I genuinely wish someone had told me sooner how easy these are. Electricians can charge around $150 for the same job, and rightfully so because they’ve trained for years to do this work safely. But if you’re on a budget and comfortable with basic wiring, it’s a project worth tackling yourself.
	3.	Black outlets and switches against patterned wallpaper is the upgrade no one talks about.

Day 3 coming soon, accountability partners. 🤍 Save this and don’t let me start anything new until this powder bath is done!

Y’all I did it! The ceiling is officially blue. @benjaminmoore Ocean City Blue to be exact, and it’s the unexpected detail this little room was needing.

Still to go: the exhaust fan cover (I’ve got a trick for painting plastic), maybe the window casing (which would snowball into the baseboards and door casing too), and crown molding to finish off the ceiling.

Big progress today. I ordered a canvas wrapped print of this fun pink alligator and it is everything I wanted, a little unexpected, a lot of personality, and the perfect playful moment against the cheetah wallpaper. I also finally got the glass shelves styled.

A couple of plan changes: the café curtain panels are on backorder so we’re still waiting on those, and I’ve decided to skip the crown molding and just paint the ceiling instead. Sometimes finishing a project means knowing when to simplify.
