I retired a couple that had been hanging in my closet for more than 10 years and replaced them with this new one from Aritzia. I’m thrilled with it! The darker denim and oversized fit feel modern, and I’ll wear it as both a shirt and a lightweight jacket heading into fall. I paired it with these trending satin lace shorts in the prettiest butter yellow—and I just noticed they’re on sale! Add simple black flip-flops, and it’s exactly the kind of outfit I love: classic, casual and wearable, with just enough of a current trend to keep it interesting. I asked ChatGPT to research something I’ve believed and researched for years: getting ready can change how we experience the day.

Not because we have to look perfect or owe anyone makeup, styled hair or a great outfit. But showering, getting dressed and caring for ourselves can signal: The day has started, and I’m participating in it.

Five research-backed reasons to get ready:

1. IT GIVES YOUR DAY STRUCTURE.

Regular routines are associated with better mental health and resilience. Getting ready can be a dependable anchor in your morning.

2. ACTION CAN COME BEFORE MOTIVATION.

Behavioral activation teaches that we don’t always have to feel motivated before we act. Sometimes the shower, the outfit and the lipstick come first, and the energy follows.

3. GROOMING CAN AFFECT HOW WE SEE OURSELVES.

Research suggests grooming can influence our self-perceived body image. It isn’t about looking better for someone else. It’s about caring for the woman in the mirror.

4. CLOTHING CAN HELP US STEP INTO A MINDSET.

Researchers call this “enclothed cognition.” What we wear may affect how we think and feel because of the meaning we attach to our clothes. An outfit can remind you who you are and how you want to show up.

5. GETTING DRESSED IS SELF-EXPRESSION.

Clothing communicates identity, personality and mood. We can choose to show up feeling comfortable, creative, capable, playful or strong.

You don’t need an appointment, an office or a lunch reservation.

YOU ARE THE OCCASION.

Take the shower. Do something with your hair. Put on an outfit you enjoy, even if you’re working from home or running errands.

It may not transform every day, but it can be one small way of saying:

I’m here. I matter. And I’m ready to participate in my own life.

I had nothing to wear—so I got rid of half my stuff. Now I have twice as much to wear. You can do the same thing.

Hi, I’m Jill, in my 50sand recently got rid of 65% of my clothes. Follow @shoppixieco for modern midlife style, wearable outfit ideas and more ways to make getting dressed easier.

Before you start, adopt a ruthless mindset. Detach from the material things and envision a closet where everything fits, feels comfortable and works for the life you’re actually living.

Make two piles: CONSIGNMENT and GOODWILL. Then take out anything that fails one of these five tests:

1. YOU HAVEN’T WORN IT IN A YEAR.

If you haven’t reached for it in the last 12 months, it goes. “Maybe someday” is not a reason to keep it.

2. IT DOESN’T FIT PERFECTLY.

If you have to tug, pull, twist, adjust or think about it after putting it on, it goes. Your clothes should feel good without negotiation.

3. IT DOESN’T FIT YOUR CURRENT LIFESTYLE.

Stop dressing the imaginary version of you. If you no longer attend those events, work that job or live that lifestyle, even the most fabulous piece is taking up valuable space.

4. IT DOESN’T MEET YOUR QUALITY-OVER-QUANTITY STANDARD.

For me, that meant being ruthless with inexpensive fast-fashion pieces that no longer looked or felt special. If it feels disposable and I wouldn’t happily choose it today, it goes.

5. IT DOESN’T PASS THE THREE-SECOND TEST.

When you put it on, you should know almost immediately. If you’re wishing it were longer, shorter, looser or a different color, it’s a no.

The result? Everything left in my closet fits, feels comfortable and works for my real life. Every piece is a good choice—and that low-level anxiety around getting dressed is gone.

The shorts would be so cute with a plain white tee, and the button-up could easily work with jeans, long denim shorts, or even over a swimsuit.
