Style tips

By Stylebyclairelopez

Here you’ll find my style tips and tricks to help you make the most of your wardrobe

Here are 3 ways you can elevate your everyday looks:

1. Add dimension: think clever layers like a white tee, lace cuffs, a shirt or faux collar

2. Accessories: of all sorts. Never underestimate their power

3. Elevated basics: mix in some slightly less basic pieces among the plainer ones. Little touches of detail, texture or the cut will make all the difference

Sometimes it’s just a matter of 1 or 2cm but it can make a huge difference so this may help you in getting the lengths right across your trousers/jeans/skirts/dresses and coats.

It’s often the reason why your outfit can look a bit off and maybe you haven’t been able to put your finger on the issue!

And it’s also the combination of the length with your footwear too.

I always think the key to unlocking your wardrobe’s potential is by getting your bottoms right - make sure you have enough variety in your jeans and trousers and everything else will be much easier 🙌🙌

These jeans are a straight leg full length style so a good one to try if you’ve struggled with wide legs
They come in 3 leg lengths - I wear the shortest as I’m 5ft 2
The waist is measured in inches and I would recommend sizing down by one or two sizes as they come up big
Also available in multiple washes
And are under £35!

If you have a short body or short legs then you will want to re balance your vertical proportions by placing the horizontal lines strategically on your body.

Wherever you place a horizontal line - ie where your clothes/footwear start and finish is the point the eye is drawn to. So trick the human eye into thinking you have longer legs or a longer body 🙌🙌

Want to look taller without wearing heels..👠?

At 5ft 2 using the power of vertical lines to elongate the silhouette is a trick I regularly employ!

One to save and share 📌📌

✔️ vertical stripes/prints

✔️ vertical details such as buttons/pin ticks etc

✔️ v necklines - particularly useful if you have a short torso

✔️ layers worn open - blazers/coats/cardigans etc will elongate and slim as they draw the eye inwards as well as vertically

Adding colour into your wardrobe 💕

One of the colours this season is this lovely coral-pink so here are 9 different outfits and colour combos for you to consider plus some tips on how to incorporate colour into your life.

💕 Often a brighter colour with black is the least good option so play around with other neutrals and colour combos

💕 Consider the overall colour balance of the outfit. A contrast can be great but colours work well when paired with other colours of a similar depth.

💕 Always make sure your accessories compliment the rest of the outfit.

A simple styling mistake is not considering the outfit as a whole …

Often this means getting the style or colour balance of your accessories wrong so that instead of complimenting your outfit, they ruin it.

So make sure this summer you have the right accessories to finish off your looks and enhance them.

Straw/raffia, tan, taupe/cream, metallics are all easy to wear, versatile options that can work with all your outfits.

That’s not to say that black is a no - because it absolutely can work providing you keep the colour balance of the outfit in mind. A random black bag on a very light outfit will look out of place.

Matching isn’t a must either but if accessories are similar tones it can create a cohesive put together look.

The petite dressing tips I use every day as someone who is 5ft 2… but I also use these many of these with my clients irrespective of stature

One to save and share 📌📌📌

🌸 Show off your wrists. Also makes your legs look longer - I’ve done reels on this previously if you don’t believe me!

🌸 If not wearing a full length trousers then show off those ankles. Wrists and ankles are the neatest part of you so it works well to have them on display.

🌸 Footwear - colour match to your trousers/tights/skin to avoid breaking up your silhouette. I also wear a flatform trainer for some extra inches!

🌸 Colour - the goal is not to break up your frame into lots of different blocks rather use colour strategically to lengthen. Wearing head to toe or dressing tonally is ideal for this. Or you can create a column of colour with a different colour jacket/coat

🌸 volume - wearing lots of volume can swamp you if you’re petite so be careful about how and wear you place it. I try to stick to keeping it one area only but do still play around with proportions and experiment to create different looks

🌸 Think vertical - vertical stripes/details/v necklines/buttons/jackets work open etc. as this will lengthen.

As ever these are guidelines and the main goal is to wear what you love and makes you feel good.

I’ve also re posted on stories a reel I did on petite dressing myths.

This styling trick works irrespective of shape…

If you want to draw the eye away from a particular area of your body then you need to create a focal point elsewhere that the eye is drawn to instead. It’s the art of distraction and it works 🙌🙌

One to save and share 📌📌

There are 3 main ways to do this:

1. Use your accessories to create the focal point - this can be necklaces/earrings/hairbands/scarves but a statement piece of footwear 👠works in a similar way.

2. Use the detail on your clothing to create that focal point - this could be embellishment, sleeve details, embroidery and more.

3. Print and colour work in the same way so be strategic about where you place these on your body - eg when wearing a print on your lower body, you’ll find the eye is drawn downwards but place it on your upper body and the eye can’t help but be drawn there.

It’s a simple and effective distraction technique

Footwear and jeans 👖 …

What does and doesn’t work together is something that came up time and time again as one of your styling issues so here is the first instalment with a look at the boot styles that work with various denim shapes.

It’s often the case that it’s the footwear or the lack of the right footwear that can be the problem and the reason why your outfit doesn’t work. Variety is important because not all boots work with all jeans styles.

The boots in my life:

🥾 A chunky flat boot - I wear predominantly with skinnies but also other styles too.

🥾 A close fitting sock boot - ankle/knee high which I wear with cropped denim in the winter both straight and wide and also under my full length wide leg styles.

🥾 A relaxed knee high boot - great over skinnies

🥾 My old shorter ankle boots don’t get a huge amount of wear with my jeans at the moment but that’s ok. They do work with other pieces in my wardrobe like skirts.

Most of these boots are old as are many of the clothes on my reel but I have linked on LTK current and alternatives.
