I worked with a 6 year old who was once an adventurous eater but over time started deleting previously accepted foods from their diet and ended up with a very limited diet. Their parents became worried about nutrition and sufficient protein intake, and rightfully so! They were also avoiding family mealtime and struggled to eat when not at home. I noticed that their child had rigid mealtime “rules” much as foods cannot touch, foods have to be a specific brand, specific temperature, etc. I also noticed some sensory sensitivities, particularly to texture and smell. Since we can’t approach picky eating in the older kids in the same way we approach it with toddlers, this is what we did: • Gradual food reintroductions • Food chaining • Mealtime environment support • Parental coaching • Nutritional support with a dietitian After a few weeks they started accepting more foods again, mealtime stress was reduced, and participated more in family meals + social eating situations. Dealing with an older picky eater can be challenging, but with the right techniques you can get them back on track eating more foods again 🫶🏼 pediatricot pickyeaters LTKKids LTKBaby LTKFamily
