This book was INTERESTING. These days, I’ve been a bit of a slump, looking for something that is a unique read. This book was a story that follows a Death Row Serial Killer, Ansel Parker, and the last twelve hours of his life, while also telling his story from the eyes of the women throughout his life. If you’re listening to it, like I did, there are a lot of different narrators, so I really needed to “zone-in”. The book is an interesting take on nature v nurture without giving a ton of empathy to a guilty serial killer. Are we solely the choices we make? Are we more than our circumstance? Are there multi-verses, in which our lives could look completely different. Notes on an execution, while not a “must-read”, is the PERFECT book for those True Crime junkies who are a little tired of the worn out murder- mystery, whodunnit, thriller that surely line your shelves. #notesonanexecution #audiobook #truecrime #novel #bookstagram #bookshelves #everand #readerreviews
I’m starting to think that I actually like books with unlikable characters. I enjoyed this book, sure! 📰📰📰🗞️/5 (3.5/5) In this story, there’s a classic case of a best friendship between a wealthy socialite, Stella, and an ambitious girl from humble beginnings, Violet. Violet has landed a journalism job in NYC, and is dead set on working her way up the ranks. Stella has never really worked a day in her life, but her tune seems to change when she returns from an extended trip abroad to see that her roommate Violet has made quite a life for herself. That’s when the whole book takes a turn. Messy relationships, long journalism hours, and the difference in personalities really shine through when Stella lands an anchor job in the spotlight. Violet never wanted to be the center of attention, but what happens when the Rising Star is someone who has always fought to “keep Violet in her place”.. This story had great twists, although the last third of the book was a little unhinged. Something about the way not one of these main characters is likable kept me turning the pages. I read 200 or the 342 pages in one day. This book is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me. Seemingly strategic open-ended story lines character development that comes out of nowhere kind of threw me off— I couldn’t tell if it was purposeful or just a lack of attention to detail. But I did devour the book, and that’s something. The song was picked bc Shawn was convinced that the book cover was an inspiration for Miley Cyrus’s “Plastic Hearts” album. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #bookreviews #bookshelf #BOTM #readerreviews #readergram
