DIY Headboard on a Budget At first, I used smaller boards… but I wasn’t loving the look so I took them off and upgraded to thicker 1x3x8’s, this made a huge difference! Here’s how you can make this beginner-friendly headboard: 1️⃣ Measure your wall to decide how wide you want your headboard → that’s how many 1x3s you’ll need. (Queen Size for me) 2️⃣ Space the boards out to your liking for a clean, modern look. 3️⃣ Add one 1x3 or 1x4 across the top to create a lip. Caulk the holes and seams. 4️⃣ Optional: add decorative molding at the bottom of the lip if you want a little extra thickness & detail. 5️⃣ Paint or stain to match your decor. I used Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black (paint from Lowe’s ). I used a quart. The whole project was super inexpensive + beginner friendly — each 1x3 was only $2.58, and the end result completely elevated my guestroom! 🛏️✨ Comment “tools” and I’ll send you the list needed to complete this look. Mine were 8 or 9 inches apart.
