The Essential

By WearToWander.Co

Essential items for a well curated closet.

In Pilates you start with the basics. Whether you’re on a mat or the reformer, you build your foundation first then progress. When I started Pilates a few years back, I thought the basics were easy and I needed more of a challenge. I’d add heavy spring loads, high hand weights, increased bands. It wasn’t until a teacher flat out told me “if you’re not getting work out of the basics you’re doing it wrong”. My first reaction was ego driven and I thought she was wrong. Once pride settled, I was able to see just how right she was.

That began my quest to do it “right” to the best of my ability. This required a different type of focus that was more aware of my muscles and form. Next week ends my in studio training with the most incredible set of teachers in training and master trainer. I’ll still have many more hours of observation/teaching/training to do, but it’s a foundational block to the process.

In the same way, the basics that we have in our closet are the essentials to build upon. I’ve been expanding each section to “The Essentials” so that you have more options, and I’m excited to share tonight’s essential: the basic white tee. It’s plain. It’s classic. It’ll never go out of style. Just like the rest of what I call “The Essentials”.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. It’s something we all have heard for years, but if we were all honest we would admit that we do that at least sometimes. I was recently out to dinner and my server was a nice young guy, but I made assumptions based off of what I could see. I thought for sure he would “fit” more into the skater crowd.

At the end of the meal, we started chatting and I learned more about him. How a simple request his father gave him as a child turned into a lifelong habit of writing the total in large numbers at the bottom of the bill for someone with poor eyesight. How he had seen nearly every football movie and the ones he loved most were from my childhood. How at 20 he had already learned that give and take in a relationship was the best way to have shared experiences.

In a five minute conversation, the scope of my lens on this guy had completely changed and I was a bit embarrassed that my initial thoughts had such a limited viewpoint. Learn from my mistake, and be willing to start conversations with others who you might think you know. Because more than likely, you’ll find that the world is full of surprises and when you show an interest in learning about others they come to life. It was an honor to have Sean as our server. He will almost certainly never know the impact of our short talk, but I’ll remain grateful always for it.

The definition of “essential” is a thing that is absolutely necessary. While the list I’ve curated of Essentials is helpful to build a base for your closet, they don’t exactly hit the fullness of that word. But what is absolutely necessary in life is hope. Out of that hope, action. As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I want to encourage you all to read his letter from the Birmingham jail. It’s a long letter that always makes me cry, but it’s well worth the time it’ll take to read.

He once said "Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in." With that, start with your neighbor. Then go on to the next. Find your stranger we’ve talked about. Someone to be kind to. Action can begin there, and travel in varying degrees to creating a movement. Just don’t let another day go by without active hope full of love for humanity.

One of the first movies I remember watching on repeat was “Sabrina” with Audrey Hepburn. If you’ve seen it, you’ll remember a naive girl leaving for France but returning as a chic and sophisticated lady. While the experiences transformed her, you saw the inner change reflected outwardly in her wardrobe.

That inner transformation is the most difficult, but if you’re looking for a little wardrobe guidance I can help you! I have recently updated the “Essentials” section on Wear to Wander, and will be incorporating the pieces into more of the outfits I share. I believe that a good wardrobe has a base of essential pieces that everything else can build on.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be expanding each item category to share what to look for when purchasing, fit recommendations, care protocols and even the history of the article of clothing. This will include brands that make the specific essential item in petite, plus, and tall sizes so you can find exactly what best fits you. A preview of this can be found under the “white button down” and I’ll share it in stories tonight!
