For her entire life, my grandmother cut her own hair and set it in foam curlers ever. Single. Night. She taught me how to do it and some night would even let me do most of the curls. In the morning she’d brush through the tight curls and spray on so much Aussie mega hold hair spray that it’s a wonder she got it out each night.

This peculiar memory came about today while I was sitting in my stylist’s chair chatting with her about cosmetology school. She mentioned that the school she went to was old school and mostly taught roller sets. Out of this, we started talking over the concept of not despising small beginnings.

While she didn’t go to one of the top schools, I’ve watched her chase after continuing education to better herself and the experience for her clients. It got me thinking about how and where I can continue to grow. Which leaves me curious- what is a skill you’d like to improve in yourself? I suppose the new year offers an opportunity or “reason” to attack it, but what if instead we start now?

Expectations in life can either surprise or disappoint you. Meanwhile, managing those expectations seems to be a lifelong pursuit towards contentment. My expectations with my post over the weekend were pretty nonexistent, but instead an honest look into my current thoughts. I’ve come to use this platform as an extension of my thoughts and in the process have found kindred spirits across the globe.

So with these nonexistent expectations came surprise and immense gratitude. I’ve been trying to reply to as many of the sweet messages you all have sent in regards to Teddy, the congratulations on marriage, and the ones just checking in to see how I am. I’ll eventually share more about our wedding, but for now know it was intimate and a day surrounded in love.

I’m working my way through the inbox, and hope to get around to each of you. I so appreciate each note and have one more thought in all of this: when you show up- be you. Nothing more. Don’t try to be like anyone else. Their life is already taken, and there is a space uniquely for you. Wherever you are trying to make friends, find love, or grow a business: let that be a reflection of you. My inbox is a testament that using my own voice and sharing my own passions will attract exactly who is supposed to be there.

In art school, there was one word you couldn’t escape. Juxtaposition. It’s the contrast between two objects seen within proximity to another. Little did I know that unlike many things I learned in college, this understanding of one word would create peace when life felt chaotic.

Why? Because I came to understand that life exists in juxtaposition. Joy and grief can coincide, and I’ve learned that frequently…they do. Yesterday we said goodbye to my sweet lab Teddy, but I had my husband by my side.

I never thought I’d find someone who could enter my life so seamlessly and bring such joy and peace. Both attributes that would be needed when grief arises. Perhaps juxtaposition is really just the yin and yang of life. Either way, give your animals an extra hug for me tonight. They deserve all the love.
