My grandmother was born in North Carolina and it was her maiden name, Haley, that I was given as my first. She had an older sister, Betsy who left home for college in a time that such things were not so common. Even more unusual was when Betsy not only went on to get a graduate degree from Stanford but also travel the world. Trekking to regions where the English language was sparse if at all existent. Before Betsy passed away I had a few months where I got to spend time with her. Talking to her about her travels. Learning about the art work that she had collected over a lifetime of exploration.
