Our fireplace mantle in our living room was one of the easiest design decisions for me - I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to do an old barn beam partly because I just love the rustic look, and partly because I wanted to add an organic and natural texture to the inside of our home. We installed it by bolting it very securely to every single stud along the wall with steel brackets (if you zoom in, you can actually see two of the brackets on either side of the base of the round mirror - I didn’t try to hide them). The round mirror also has a dual purpose - I chose this shape and size because I just adore round mirrors and they look good almost anywhere, but functionally I wanted a larger piece because it hides a media nook we built into the wall behind it (giving us the option to put a TV here if we want to - we don’t plan to, but it’s still good to create options during the building process because it’s easiest to do them then).
