When it comes to decorating a room, I almost always start with the rug. It serves as the foundation for everything else and can completely change the look, feel, and function of a space.
Here are my 5 tips for selecting the perfect rug:
✨ 1. Start with the rug.
Whether I’m designing a living room, bedroom, porch, or even helping decorate a college dorm, the rug is usually my first purchase. It gives me direction for the entire space.
✨ 2. Let the rug set the mood.
A rug can make a room feel cozy, elegant, casual, collected, or whimsical. Decide how you want the space to feel before choosing your rug.
✨ 3. Colors and textures matter.
I personally gravitate toward warm, inviting spaces that still feel elevated and timeless. The right texture and color palette can instantly make a room feel more polished and intentional.
✨ 4. Don’t overlook indoor/outdoor rugs.
They have come such a long way! Many of them are beautiful, soft underfoot, and incredibly durable. Plus, they’re easy to clean. If it’s too large for the washing machine, grab the Oxiclean and power washer, ladies. 😉
✨ 5. Size matters.
This may be the biggest mistake I see. A rug that is too small can make an entire room feel disconnected. When in doubt, think larger. A properly sized rug anchors your furniture, maximizes your space, and makes the room feel finished.
