PACKING TIPS

Travel with a Carry On and other packing tips.

END OF AUGUST

A hiking trip to Montana got derailed due to my partially torn hamstring flaring up. Instead of cancelling though, we pivoted and spent the week on a more relaxed note – biking, boating, fly fishing and enjoying quality time with good friends. It was a perfect get away to wind down summer.

Dries van Noten has been back on my radar lately. The fall collection has some great pieces that would layer nicely into my wardrobe. The belted denim jacket above is a chic update to the relaxed original. The matching skirt is a great piece too. Mytheresa has the best prices on DVN, often significantly less than other sites.

I wear sandals well into October in California as long as they’re not too summery. A friend was sporting these Jimmy Choo’s the other day and they looked so good. A dressier, buy equally comfortable, option to Birkenstocks. They also come in cream.

PACKING FOR BEACH GETAWAYS

The relaxed vibe I love to create for a beach getaway is anchored in four simple pieces – a loose caftan style dress, flat slip on sandals, a beach to town tote and a stylish straw hat. Add some great detailing to these pieces - like embroidery on the Silvia Tcherassi Tunic Dress or the beaded trim on this Maison Michel hat - and you’ve got a look that’s chic, effortless and cool.

TOP TEN AT HOME OR AWAY

This week’s Top Ten is inspired partially by what I observed on a recent visit to Copenhagen.

The outfits that carried the most cache for me were ones that looked effortlessly pulled together in a classic but unexpected way. The formula was based on pairing a tailored piece (trouser, pencil skirt) with a simple tank or tee, then anchored with walking friendly casual flats. There’s a practicality element in how to dress when navigating cobblestone streets. That’s where the sturdy shoes come in, but a low heeled sandal could dress up these looks in a breeze. Pearls tossed on without care added an interesting contrast. The overall look was polished but undone.

Add these pieces to your summer packing list. They’re classics to wear at home or away.

I’m adding these three pieces to capsule travel collection. The High Sport pants seem to be on every travel aficionado’s packing list. It’s about time I give them a try. Alternatives at lower price points are readily available but I want to see what all the fuss is about with High Sport. Will report back. I already have the Moncler Wete jacket in navy. It’s a fantastic, versatile piece. A black one would take me even farther and even top an elegant look for evening. A win win for me. A pair of flats to slip on after a day of walking in sneakers is always welcome. The silhouette on this style from Ayede is a bit more sleek and chic than a rounded toe ballerina. I’d wear them to dinner, short jaunts around town, and down to breakfast when I want to slip on something quickly.

TRAVEL WITH A LIMITED PALETTE

I stuck to my packing rule of a limited palette for a recent trip to New York. Black, white, and beige pieces are completely interchangeable and create a pulled together, classic look. For a one week run around the city, I brought a favorite tan blazer, black and blue high waisted jeans, a white tee, black thin knit top, two blouses, a black cropped jacket, a black short coat, tan pants and three pair of shoes – sneakers, sandals, and boots…in a carry on of course.

I love this simple black dress from Toteme. It’s elegant but fabricated in a heavy linen which reads somewhat casual. I’ll wear it now with loafers and a coat, but come summer, I’ll slip on barely there sandals and swap in a raffia bag. The beauty of the dress lies in the unusual cut both fitted and draped in all the right places. #transitionalstyle #springlooks

One of my most popular travel posts is Packing a Carry-On for a Week in Cold Weather. I’m giving it an update with fresh styles and actually even less items that still provide plenty of variety in styling. This guide was created for a week in Europe but would apply to any urban destination. It’s focused on layers, changing weather, and lots of walking. With laundry capabilities, packing just these items could be multiplied into an even longer trip. I’ve done it so it’s possible. The key is choosing pieces that have the versatility to be worn at least a couple different ways. If an item doesn’t pass that requirement, it’s eliminated.

When I think about what to pack for a trip, I start by compartmentalizing themes. I have a day and night theme and within those worlds a core group of pieces to anchor the looks.

For example, I've selected the above items (variations I have in my own closet) as key pieces I know are comfortable, stylish, warm and versatile. They'll lay the groundwork for most day looks.

Sneakers could be swapped for boots, a coat for a trench, sweater for a shirt and a number of scarves will fill in as needed.

I always minimize my jewelry when traveling, ideally selecting pieces that go from day to night. These earrings are perfect.

The COS turtleneck is a new purchase I also bought in black, and stripes that will provide great layering opportunities if it gets chilly. The J.Crew jeans are a new purchase too. I sized up for a very relaxed look.

A refresher on what I consider essential for in-flight comfort. It all starts with a substantial tote. Even if I'm checking a bag, I like to have a large tote to gather all of the things I want close to me en route. Laptop, ipad, chargers and headphones cover the tech stuff.

A cashmere wrap, eye mask and compression socks assure comfort. I always have a thick moisturizer and By Terry lip balm to combat in-flight dryness. Cleansing wipes are a must especially before landing when I'm trying to look fresh. A texturizing spray revives my flat, limp hair, and a makeup palette that works overtime for lips and cheeks.

I wear an easy on/off shoe like a Chelsea boot. It saves space in the suitcase and is convenient to slip on for mid-flight walks.

These are all my absolutes!

The start of a summer capsule collection...

There are items in my closet I’ll always have. They’re basics that effortlessly pull an outfit together and key pieces for travel. I’ll update them occasionally when they look tired or simply to keep their style current.

A cropped trench jacket is a new favorite. The shorter length makes sense for California’s climate. Striped tees are favorite hero pieces that look chic with jeans, colored trousers or a leather skirt. A small tote in a neutral color is a classic investment piece and wearable year round. Hoops are always a winner in my book and this bubble style from Heub is interesting. I like how the post sits below the top of the hoop, which I imagine would conceal any pull on the ear lobe. Sneakers and bucket hats are pieces on rotation all the time. I always have several styles on hand for variety. And a tailored black trouser can go from polished to casual with a few styling tweaks.

Having the comforts to make travel stress free is essential. Selecting pieces to elevate the experience takes it a step beyond. I personally could use a little refresh and the above items are the direction I’m going. Any would make fantastic gifts for the frequent flyer too.

I’m trying to stay in a summer mode, but have fall travel on my mind. I’m mentally checking off a few items I’d like to have with me on my next trip in September. The foundation of my travel attire is a uniform I’ve stuck with for years. Although the pieces remain the same – slim pants, comfortable walking shoes, lightweight jackets, a crossbody bag – I like to switch up the styles. The pieces above stay true to the uniform but would offer a subtle update.

The Prada padded nylon bag is a multi-tasking, dress up or down workhorse that would also fit nicely into my carry-on tote. I’ll wear slim black pants or leggings with Birkenstocks, low boots, loafers or a chunky heel making them an ideal option for day to night dressing. Having an assortment of lightweight layering options makes getting dressed a breeze. For years, I’ve traveled with a navy Moncler jacket similar to the above, so army green would be a refreshing change. I never like to be without sunglasses, so they are switched up often. The tinted green lens on this pair from Celine is quietly chic. http://liketk.it/2EaIM #liketkit @liketoknow.it #LTKeurope #LTKstyletip #LTKtravel

Variations on these key pieces are the mainstay of what I like to wear in flight. The destination and time of year dictate the jacket and shoe, but the other items are pretty much reliable staples. Comfortable jeans that can be worn with a variety of shoes, a scarf to transform several looks and add warmth in flight, a lightweight crossbody bag and a simple shirt have proved to be my travel uniform. They all go the extra mile with endless styling options once I’ve reached my destination too. #inflight #myuniform #travel #packing #triedandtrue
