Quick lunch with a friend in this casual look. This time of year, the mornings are cool while the afternoons heat up - meaning layers are in order.⁠ ⁠ Wearing Levi's with a striped shirt and an old S'Max Mara cashmere jacket from 4 or 5 years ago. It's a classic and I also have it in black.⁠ ⁠ Tod's sneakers, Bottega bag...oldies but goodies. The Bottega Andiamo bag is still readily available in numerous sizes and colors. I love this funky color (Acorn if I remember correctly) that looks so much more interesting with everything it's paired with. Wearing a trio of old pieces for a fresh fall look.⁠ ⁠ The cropped Dries Van Noten camel jacket is from spring. Who knew that would be the color I'd be focusing on for fall? I love wearing jackets with nothing underneath...maybe just a tank.⁠ ⁠ I talked about these Brochu Walker vegan leather pants last September. Ended up getting them in brown too. Another great silhouette for California and other warm weather fall locations. ⁠ Somewhat newish are the Alaia perforated Mary Janes. They're as comfortable as the simple Ava style I have from The Row, but add a little more personality with the pattern.⁠ ⁠ When I love a piece I know I'll wear a lot, I often buy it in another color. For most of September and October in California, the best way for me to feel like I’m dressing for the season is to wear a dark palette in lightweight fabrics. I'll reach for cottons, silk voile, and semi-sheer wools to pull together looks that create a fall vibe. ⁠ ⁠ One silhouette I love to work in is an elbow length sleeve top. The one I'm wearing is new from Vince. The fit and weight are perfection. I'll probably get a backup since I'll wear it so much. I also bought it in brown which looks very berry like on the website but is more rust brown in person. ⁠ ⁠ The Theory black cotton skirt is a summer purchase and still available. It's very lightweight and perfect for warm autumn days.⁠ ⁠ I like all black with a contrasting shoe color. Here with one of my favorite shoe purchases from spring/summer - the Miu Miu boat shoe in weathered white. Splurgy for a boat shoe but to me special enough and crazy comfortable. Universally flattering. Prefer this silhouette with a mid heel shoe. Love the mini Flamenco bag from Loewe. END OF AUGUST A hiking trip to Montana got derailed due to my partially torn hamstring flaring up. Instead of cancelling though, we pivoted and spent the week on a more relaxed note – biking, boating, fly fishing and enjoying quality time with good friends. It was a perfect get away to wind down summer. Dries van Noten has been back on my radar lately. The fall collection has some great pieces that would layer nicely into my wardrobe. The belted denim jacket above is a chic update to the relaxed original. The matching skirt is a great piece too. Mytheresa has the best prices on DVN, often significantly less than other sites. I wear sandals well into October in California as long as they’re not too summery. A friend was sporting these Jimmy Choo’s the other day and they looked so good. PACKING FOR BEACH GETAWAYS The relaxed vibe I love to create for a beach getaway is anchored in four simple pieces – a loose caftan style dress, flat slip on sandals, a beach to town tote and a stylish straw hat. TOP TEN AT HOME OR AWAY This week’s Top Ten is inspired partially by what I observed on a recent visit to Copenhagen. The outfits that carried the most cache for me were ones that looked effortlessly pulled together in a classic but unexpected way. The formula was based on pairing a tailored piece (trouser, pencil skirt) with a simple tank or tee, then anchored with walking friendly casual flats. There’s a practicality element in how to dress when navigating cobblestone streets. That’s where the sturdy shoes come in, but a low heeled sandal could dress up these looks in a breeze. Pearls tossed on without care added an interesting contrast. The overall look was polished but undone. Add these pieces to your summer packing list. THE CLASSICS
This is the second in an ongoing series of favorite things. I post a lot on styling ideas and fabulous products so I think it’s also good to see what actually ends up in my closet and what I wear on repeat. In this image, I’m wearing three pieces that have been part of my grab and go daily style lately. I wrote about the Bottega Veneta Andiamo bag previously and can’t speak highly enough on the quality, comfort, and versatility. This may be one of the few bags I’ll repeat in another color. The burgundy is calling my name. As far as ease, the one and done Brochu Walker Looker sweater makes me feel dressed and pulled together without a thought. I toss it on over faded or dark jeans, black pants and slim skirts. The cream and white looks fresh this time of year too. For jewelry, one bold piece is clean, modern and fuss free. Again, the ease of slipping on a cuff trumps fastening bracelets or necklaces. The Sidney Garber cuff is a timeless piece to treasure forever. #LTKGiftGuide #LTKHoliday #LTKstyletip
SCARVES ARE ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA The weather has finally allowed me to venture into my scarf drawer. I love wearing scarves and treasure the collection I’ve accumulated over the years – many acquired while traveling. I think they’re also a great item to gift. From soft silk squares to fringed cashemere, there’s a style for every person and need. A few of my favorite silk squares are the solid Margault from The Row (wearing in gray) and the graphic patterns from Toteme. Both have an excellent hand and tie well. When I want something larger and warmer, but not bulky, I’ll turn to one in cashmere/silk. These have a number of versatile styling options. The polka dot or paisley prints from Saint Laurent are long standing classics. I also love a heavier knit scarf for truly cold days – a rarity in California but useful on occasion. Red – the color of the season will continue through 2024 as the color for spring. I’m up for it, in small doses. A pair of socks is easy to test the waters or for those who don’t like the bold power of bright red. For me, I love it framing the face. A scarf, beanie, or sweater are my top picks. At the very least, a swipe of crimson on the lips is always chic. Cle de Peau lipstick and Westman Atelier lip compact have a beautiful finish with staying power.
