Silk scarves haven’t been a part of my outfit rotation lately, so they suddenly feel fresh. A simple silk square offers plenty of styling options and immediately elevates a tweed blazer, cropped jacket or tipped cardigan. I’m pairing those pieces with any pant I feel like wearing that day – a pair of jeans or trousers – then slipping on a pair of loafers. Jewelry is kept to a minimum highlighting solely with great earrings. A swipe of lip color and I’m out the door looking casual but polished. #LTKGiftGuide

SCARVES ARE ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA

The weather has finally allowed me to venture into my scarf drawer. I love wearing scarves and treasure the collection I’ve accumulated over the years – many acquired while traveling. I think they’re also a great item to gift. From soft silk squares to fringed cashemere, there’s a style for every person and need. A few of my favorite silk squares are the solid Margault from The Row (wearing in gray) and the graphic patterns from Toteme. Both have an excellent hand and tie well. When I want something larger and warmer, but not bulky, I’ll turn to one in cashmere/silk. These have a number of versatile styling options. The polka dot or paisley prints from Saint Laurent are long standing classics. I also love a heavier knit scarf for truly cold days – a rarity in California but useful on occasion. The alpaca boucle from Loewe is quite chic.

My favorite shoe to gain a little height is a heeled loafer. I wear them frequently with jeans and trousers. The Bottega Veneta Monsieur in black and The Row soft loafer in brown are both supremely comfortable. But for something a little dressier, a pump projects a more refined style. I’m eyeing Gabriela Hearts’s sculptural GORGEOUS Sofia pump and The Row’s equally fabulous glossed low heel pump as contenders. Both are under 3″ which is my max. Jeans, trousers, dresses or skirts all work beautifully here.

The holiday gatherings I’m going to don’t require anything too dressed up but I like to put in the effort to look festive. My preferred mode is by adding just one piece with sparkle or shine. A metallic or beaded skirt with a simple sweater is the easiest way to go. Or contrast the shimmer with a cotton poplin (look at TWP for inspiration). Another option is to use shine on the upper portion of an outfit. This works especially well for dinners or seated events. I’d love the ivory silk satin peplum jacket with a slim pencil skirt, trousers or even a pair of jeans. It’s a fabulous piece. Earrings or a brooch are another easy way to up the wow factor. This is an opportunity to play with something bold and unique. Scour antique markets or 1st Dibs for amazing vintage finds. A beautiful bag is another finishing touch not to be overlooked. I adore Saint Laurent’s quilted velvet Loulou bag and local designer Marian Paquette makes beautiful velvet bags in a wonderful array of colors. I have several and wear them often (good for travel too since they pack flat). For a splurge, Bottega Veneta’s sequin pouch is gorgeous in red, green or gold. But for the all time deal, look at the similar options from Mango. They’re quite lovely and won’t break the bank.

Red – the color of the season will continue through 2024 as the color for spring. I’m up for it, in small doses. A pair of socks is easy to test the waters or for those who don’t like the bold power of bright red. For me, I love it framing the face. A scarf, beanie, or sweater are my top picks. At the very least, a swipe of crimson on the lips is always chic. Cle de Peau lipstick and Westman Atelier lip compact have a beautiful finish with staying power. I use both.

EASY EVENING STYLE

When considering what to wear to holiday gatherings, comfort and warmth are my top priorities. If I can make my favorite cashmere sweater look festive, I’ve succeeded. Add tights and I’m super comfy. This is where skirts come in as my favorite styling piece for the season. I also prefer a thrown together look versus a one and done dress. It allows for creativity and personality to shine – which is half the fun of getting dressed! A statement skirt – sequins, metallic, beaded, or embellished – paired with a relaxed sweater is an ideal outfit. A splash of jewelry and a fabulous bag further pulls the look together.

Styling tip: balance the proportions. The more full the skirt, the slimmer the top…and vice versa. For a classic Dior silhouette, go for a full skirt with a fitted top tucked in and a belt to define the waist. With a pencil skirt silhouette, I like a billowy oversized top. A tucked in top also works for a streamlined look but I’d balance it with a roomy tuxedo jacket. Beaded skirts work better this time of year than satin. Static is a major bummer when you’ve arrived and your skirt is not behaving. As far as sheer, I’m all in with a partial amount balanced with an opaque tight (Falke and Wolford are my go-tos), like in the photo above.

I post a lot on styling ideas and fabulous products so I think it’s also good to see what actually ends up in my closet and what I wear on repeat. In this image, I’m wearing three pieces that have been part of my grab and go daily style lately. I wrote about the Bottega Veneta Andiamo bag previously and can’t speak highly enough on the quality, comfort, and versatility. This may be one of the few bags I’ll repeat in another color. The burgundy is calling my name. As far as ease, the one and done Brochu Walker Looker sweater makes me feel dressed and pulled together without a thought. I toss it on over faded or dark jeans, black pants and slim skirts. The cream and white looks fresh this time of year too. For jewelry, one bold piece is clean, modern and fuss free. Again, the ease of slipping on a cuff trumps fastening bracelets or necklaces. The Sidney Garber cuff is a timeless piece I’ll treasure forever.

After getting (and loving) the BR Luna cashmere sweater I previously wrote about, I took a second look at the BR site. The loose stitch Fadma cashmere-silk pullover caught my eye. Unsure on the sizing and quality, I visited their store near my home. It’s another winner. Incredibly soft. The sleeves are long – perfect for scrunching. I think the proportions and silhouette give it a modern look. And the slightly irregular weave adds a handmade look.

I also like the boxy Nadia cable sweater in cream. They’re both just easy great sweaters to toss on.

THE HUMBLE HERO

A highlight show from the SS24 collections was Louise Trotter’s debut at Carven. The look above sums up the appeal and provides styling inspiration.

I’m imagining fresh ways to wear the humble grey pullover. I’ll pair it with a skirt that has textural interest. This white pencil skirt from Vince is perfect and could become another hero piece in my closet.

Square toe flats also caught my eye. A pair from Gianvito Rossi in a snake print reads as a neutral and will step in when I want to punctuate an outfit with something eye catching.

Back to the humble hero though…the grey sweater. When I don’t want to wear it quite so loose, I’ll pin it up inspired by Erdem’s one and done piece. I can pair it with a full skirt and get a new look going with a nod to Prada or Bottega Veneta. And of course, tossed on with a pair of jeans and an oversized blazer is easy and timeless.

WAITING FOR SWEATER WEATHER

When the weather won’t cooperate with the season but I still want to wear a sweater, I turn to this featherweight cashmere knit from Khaite. Purchased awhile back, it’s brought back season after season because it’s so good (ecru is 15% off here). I may add one in black. The jeans are Rag & Bone. They’re soft and easy to pair with everything.

Packing forces me to think about my wardrobe in a streamlined manner. There are a few essentials I always take without hesitation – one being a slim knit black turtleneck. I know it will be a workhorse worn under other knits when it’s cold or on its own as a classic piece that always looks chic. Slim is key for easy layering under jackets. Plus it’s a silhouette that can be dressed up for dinners. A black turtleneck is not a piece I’ll splurge on. I’ll save those dollars for pieces worthy of investing on. My focus is on comfort and fit and I prefer a flat knit over a rib. It’s more flattering to tuck in. Vince, COS, Theory usually fit the bill. A couple of seasons ago, Zara had a slightly cropped style (similar) in a very lightweight fabric. I bought it in black and gray and wore both so much on a trip to Vienna, I came home and bought two more for backup.

With high waisted skirts and jeans, a boxy cropped jacket is the way to go. The silhouette balances proportions beautifully.

Day to day, I’m usually wearing a pretty basic top and bottom, so a jacket (and shoes) is where I make the look feel special. From vintage finds to investment pieces, I love having a mini collection to choose from. My latest purchase – a Gucci ivory cropped tweed – is a timeless investment piece I’ll wear for years to come.

I have a feeling I’ll be wearing these pieces on repeat. The sweater and pants, both by Brochu Walker, are supremely comfortable and will act as the starting point for numerous looks. The cashmere v-neck is loose with open hem sides ready to be layered or worn on its own. And I absolutely love the vegan leather pants. I’ll wear them day or night, with flats, sneakers or heels. Fall Outfits

I love this color palette year round but think it looks especially chic in the fall.

Ivory shoes continue to make outfits feel fresh and in the form of a loafer doesn’t stray far from my classic sensibilities.

FENDI’s new Origami bag is a nice introduction to the covetable handbag game and in taupe is a winner.

LOULOU STUDIO’s cashmere blend coat is simple and beautiful. The clean lines make it suitable to wear over a variety of pieces from casual day looks to dressier evening.

When I don’t feel like wearing loose slouchy jeans and want to be a bit more pulled together, I’ll toss on a dress. The ribbed knit from LOULOU STUDIO or twisted flannel from TOTEME (below) are silhouettes I like.
