Rectal temperature is the most accurate way to take your baby’s temperature because it is a core temperature - or a temperature reading inside the body. It is least likely to be influenced by external factors such as environmental temperature or drinking/eating hot or cold liquids and foods. Keep in mind: ▫️never use a glass thermometer ▫️rectal and ear temperatures are usually 0.5 F higher than oral temperature, while armpit and forehead temperatures are usually 0.5 F lower than oral temperature ▫️a fever is considered to be 100.4 F or higher, while a body temperature that is too low is 95 F or lower. Both require the attention of your provider ASAP. ▫️ young babies under 3 months don’t have as developed of immune systems, so if your baby this age has a fever of 100.4 F or higher or is hypothermic, call your healthcare provider or go to the emergency room. ▫️If your baby has a rectal temperature reading of 97.7 F and lower, you should call your provider ASAP. ▫️Babies and children older than 3 months with a rectal thermometer reading of up to 102.2 F should be monitored. They can be treated with over the counter medications like acetaminophen (Tylenol) to lower fever. Please follow the product’s dosage instructions and contact your provider. ▫️Babies that are 3 to 12 months old with a rectal temperature reading of 95 F or lower or a fever that is 102.2 F or higher should be assessed by a healthcare provider ASAP. If your baby or child of any age also has difficulty breathing, is crying uncontrollably, has a stiff neck, or has a seizure, go straight to the emergency room or call 911. There may be an underlying problem that needs immediate medical attention. If your baby or child of any age is unresponsive, start infant or child CPR and call 911.
